#DailyDevotion Lead Godly & Holy Lives Since The LORD Is Coming

2 Peter 310The Lord’s day will come like a thief. On that day the heavens will pass away with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by heat, and the earth and what was done on it will be exposed. 11Since all these things will be destroyed in this way, think how holy and godly you should live, 12 waiting for and earnestly desiring the coming of God’s day that will destroy the heavens with fire and melt the elements with heat. 13But according to His promise we expect new heavens and a new earth where righteousness lives. 14With this to look forward to, dear friends, do your best to have Him find you without a spot or blemish and at peace.

Our LORD Jesus Christ is coming at a time when we do not expect him. We’ll just be living our lives and then, TA DA! here he comes on the clouds with all his angels. Peter says on that day the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed by heat and everything on the earth and what is done on it will be exposed. Now one professor I know says that Peter cannot be saying here that all matter is annihilated for that would violate Romans 8 where Paul says that all creation is waiting to be redeemed. Well then how do we make sense of the two? I would point us to 1 Cor. 3 where Paul says everything will be tested with fire or purified with fire. As such, all that is not of faith in us will be burnt up. Our bodies will be purified by fire on that day. So in the same way, the sin which has corrupted created will be burned up and it will we purified, resurrected even as we will be changed instantly on that day if we are still living.

Well if everything is going to be exposed and destroyed in this way, how should we live now? We should be thinking daily how holy and godly we should be living. We should live our lives of faith trying to please our LORD. We should not be living in lust like the rest of world which does not trust our God to fulfill our hearts desire. God will do so and He has given us eternity to do so, yet our hearts desire is to see God and to be loved by him. This he does and will do. If there is anything godly on our hearts that is yet to be fulfill, He will do it when it is right and good to do so.

In the meantime let us wait for and earnestly desire the coming of God’s day. For in that day he will give us a new heavens and a new earth, i.e. the one we have resurrected like our bodies will be resurrected. In that age, the cosmos will work the way the LORD intended for it to work. It will rain when it is supposed to rain and be dry when it is supposed to be dry. The crops won’t fail. The animals will do what they are supposed to do and the like. God has promised it so we know it will come to pass.

Now Peter says that since this is so “do your best to have Him find you without a spot or blemish and at peace.” Now we also know our LORD Jesus Christ will present us to the Father in this manner. It is through the means of grace our LORD Jesus makes us so. So let us not despise such gifts but avail ourselves to them often to fulfill Peter’s words, be baptized, confess your sins, receive the Supper, listen to your pastor and comfort one another with the Gospel you have received.

Heavenly Father, grant us your Holy Spirit through the means of grace that we may indeed be found without spot, blemish and at peace on the day of our LORD Jesus Christ and enter into his glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
