#DailyDevotion Jesus Is Better Than Moses

Heb 3:1-6  Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,  (2)  who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.  (3)  For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.  (4)  (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.)  (5)  Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later,  (6)  but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

In chapters one and two the author shows us how Jesus is better than the angels. In this chapter the author is demonstrating how Jesus is better than Moses. “Consider Jesus,” he says. Jesus is the apostle and high priest of our confession. He is the apostle as he was sent by the Father. Jesus was sent to proclaim the kingdom of God is at hand, to be repentant, to believe on him and the resurrection of the dead. Jesus is our high priest. He offered up his own body as the atoning sacrifice for our sin. He intercedes for us always at the right hand of God. Jesus was faithful to the Father who sent him in all that he did, even to the point of death, even death on a cross. Jesus was faithful like Moses in God’s house.

But Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses. For Moses was only a servant in the house of God. He prepared God’s people through the Law to receive Jesus, the Father’s son when he came. Moses testified about Jesus through the commandments, the rites, the sacrifices, the priesthood and the offerings. Jesus would fulfill all these things through his life, death and resurrection from the dead. In his ascension he fulfills his office as high priest as he intercedes for his Church, his house.

Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. It is his house as well. It is Jesus, who is God, who builds this house, his temple through the gospel and the Holy Spirit. This house is the third temple in which Christ through us offers up living sacrifices daily to the Father of lights. Each of us is the temple of God when we are baptized into Christ, receive the Holy Spirit and put our hope in Jesus Christ for our salvation.

As Hebrews says, “we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.” Our confidence and hope is this, through Jesus’ body and blood we have access to God our Father in the Holy of Holies in heaven. It is our sins have been atoned for by the blood of Christ. Our hope, confidence and confession of faith is Jesus is Lord who died for us, rose from the dead, sits at the right hand of the Father where he rules, who instituted a new covenant in which our sins are remembered no more and who raise us up, like himself, to everlasting life on the Last Day.

Almighty God and Father, you sent your son Jesus Christ into the world to build a holy temple, a house for you to dwell in, namely his Church. You have made us your house through baptism and confession of Jesus as our savior. Continue to give us this gift of faith that we may indeed be pillars and living stones in your house on the day of Jesus’ revelation to the world. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
