#DailyDevotion Jesus Will Turn Your World Upside Down

Pentecost Tuesday

Read Luke 22:24–46

Luk 22:25-27 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors.  (26)  But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.  (27)  For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

Jesus is always turning our world upside down, or rather he is turning it right side up because our worldview is upside down.  Elsewhere in an unrelated statement he says, “Mat 16:25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”  Now we’re hearing to serve is to lead and the greatest is the youngest i.e. lowest station.

Jesus, the creator of the world came to serve and still serves us as our great high priest before the Father.  Here in this text we see Jesus serving us in the lowest station.  Jesus is going to die as the lowest of criminals.  He does this that we might know the love of God. 1John 4:10

Jesus knows the costs of serving us, even though he is God that does not help him being human here.  God, the second person of the Trinity, the Son, must experience our sin, guilt, shame and death by becoming sin for us.  Then he must suffer the consequence of sin which is death.

We see Jesus’ anguish in the garden as he prays, Luk 22:42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

Jesus becomes the least in the Kingdom of God.  Yet because he submits himself as such he becomes the greatest.  His submission shows us God’s great love for us.  If he doesn’t sacrifice his Son, if the Son doesn’t voluntarily give us his life, then we would not know the love God has for us.

Lord Jesus Christ, give us your mind, conform our wills to your will that we serve on another even as you have come to serve us.  Amen.
