Romans 5:6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

 

It was the right time. The Creator of heaven and earth of all things seen and unseen had been moving all history and nations to this moment in time. All the nations around Jerusalem spoke Greek and the Romans had created an era of safe travel the world had never known. It was at this time God sent his son into the world to save the world.

 

Christ came at this time to save the weak. If you have never been weak Christ did not come to die for you. But if you were weak spiritually, unable to do all that the Law of God commanded, I have good news for you. Jesus came for you. Jesus came to save you from death by dying your death. You never have to experience death. In Christ, you have eternal life.

 

Jesus came to die for the ungodly at this time. If you have never been ungodly, Jesus did not come to die for you. But if you have chosen to do the evil you wanted to do, if you have rebelled even against your conscience, then Jesus came and died for you. Jesus in his death has suffered what you deserved because of sinful actions and can give you a clear conscience by being baptized into his name.

 

Christ Jesus came to die for sinners. If you are not a sinner, Jesus did not come to die for you.

But if you have fallen short of God’s will for you more times than you can count, if you have missed the mark of God’s plan for your life, then Jesus died for you. Jesus has shed his blood so that you may be justified before God. So much is God’s love for you that he would send his son to die the death of a cross and shed his blood there so your sins may be atoned for.

 

Jesus Christ came to die for the enemies of God. If you have never been an enemy of God, Jesus did not come to die for you. But if you have sought ways to circumvent God’s laws, if you have injured in word, thought or deed those made in his own image and likeness whom he loves, Jesus has come to reconcile you to God and give you life. You have been reconciled to the Father through Jesus’ death and Jesus gives you his life by his resurrection from the dead.

 

So the good news is if you have ever been weak, ungodly, a sinner and an enemy of God, Jesus has died and shed his blood for you so you can be reconciled to God the Father, be justified, and be given his life for eternity. If you haven’t, then well, you’re on your own.

 

Heavenly Father, we in no way have deserved your mercy, but out of your great love for us you have saved us by the death and resurrection of your son Jesus Christ. Grant us faith to always believe and trust in this that we may inherit eternal life.
