Rom. 831What does this mean? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He didn’t spare His own Son but gave Him up for all of us — He will certainly with Him give us everything. 33Who will accuse those whom God has chosen? It is God Who declares us righteous. 34 Who will condemn? Christ died, more than that, He rose, He is at the right hand of God, and He prays for us. 35 Who will separate us from God’s love? Will sorrow, hardship or persecution, hunger or nakedness, danger or a sword? 36 So it is written: “For You we are being killed all day long. We are considered sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 But in all this He Who loved us helps us win an overwhelming victory. 38 I’m convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, nothing now nor in the future, no powers, 39 nothing above or below, nor any other creature can ever separate us from the love God has for us in Christ Jesus our Lord.
As Christians who confess Jesus Christ is Yahweh, we can be certain God is for us. If God is for us, who can be against us, Paul argues. Well how can we be certain God is for us? He didn’t spare his own Son but gave him up for all of us. The Father appointed to Son to be slain for us from all eternity. As he asked Abraham to sacrifice his son to show his love for God, the Father actually does sacrifice his son Jesus for us all. There is no one excluded. Jesus is the propitiation for our sins. His death pays our penalty for sin. His life is the ransom from death.
If God the Father has done this, he most certainly with Him, i.e. Jesus give us everything. Yes, he means everything. All that is the Father’s is the Son’s. All that is the Son’s belongs to all who are joined to the son in Holy Baptism. The kingdom of God is theirs. Creation is theirs. God’s righteousness, holiness, and glory is given to us. God the Father himself is our inheritance.
There is no one who can accuse us. God has declared us righteous, justified, and innocent. Satan, the accuser has been cast out of heaven and there is no one to accuse us there but our consciences and our baptism gives us a clear conscience before the judgment seat of the Father. No one can condemn us. Christ Jesus intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father. My friends that is real power being exercised on our behalf. He died and he rose. If he has risen from the dead never to die again then all power, authority and dominion is his.
No matter what the circumstances of our life may be at the moment they are nothing compared to what we have in Christ Jesus. He has won the overwhelming victory by his resurrection. His resurrection is ours. His victory is ours. See now what Paul says, “Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.” NOTHING, because he who has died and rose for you by his resurrection has overcome EVERYTHING. Paul list of gives us a good idea of all that he has authority over at the right hand of God. There is nothing excluded.
Therefore when the devil tries to convince you saying, “Oh, you’ve really messed this one up. He’ll never take you back now.” you should just remember Paul’s words here and repeat them out loud so that he may clearly hear, “Nothing in all creation can separate God’s love for me in Christ Jesus my LORD.” Your salvation is sure and certain in Jesus.
Heavenly Father, what great love you have shown un in Christ Jesus your Son our LORD, that we may remember and trust that love in all circumstances of our lives so we may rest in your peace and steadfast love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
