#DailyDevotion Who Will Open Your Lips To Sing A New Song?
Psalm 40 3He put a new song in my mouth, a praise to our God. Many shall see it and fear, and trust in the LORD. 4Blessed is the man who puts his trust in the LORD, and doesn’t turn to those who are arrogant and are entangled in lies.
Wow, notice who puts a new song in our mouths and praise to our God. It is the LORD Himself. This is not self ginned up praise and thanksgiving. This is the Spirit led new song based on what the LORD has done for us. This new song spells out what the LORD has done for us specifically. People know what we have been praying for. People know we’ve been trusting in the LORD to deliver us. So when God opens our mouth to sing a new song many shall see it and fear and trust in the LORD. They see our trust. They see our God act. It inspires faith in them.
We will be blessed if we put our trust in the LORD. That’s what David says by the Holy Spirit. We see this in his life. While it isn’t always perfect, while people may be out to kill him, David puts his trust in the LORD. The LORD establishes a kingdom and a dynasty through him. Indeed, the Messiah, who is the LORD, will be born of his seed. Being blessed apparently doesn’t mean you have no troubles and trials, enemies and friends who betray you. Jesus didn’t even have that and He trusted in His Father and our Father perfectly. It does mean Romans 8 will take place in your life where the LORD works all things out for good for you.
He warns us against turning to the arrogant who are entangled with lies. Arrogant people will often try to give you advice about things they’ve never done over problems they never solved. They sound good but they aren’t telling the truth. Trust in the LORD instead. People with experience and wisdom rarely are arrogant. If while you are putting your trust in the LORD and He puts someone with humility who has had your problem before, you may want to listen to them and then go back to the LORD in prayer to see if this is the best way. Otherwise, as the Psalm begins, wait patiently for the LORD Jesus Christ to act in your life. Don’t act out of fear. I will not trust someone who is pushing me to act. They are acting out of their own self-interest at your expense.
5You have done many wonderful things for us, O LORD my God. You have made many wonderful plans; no one can be compared with You. I want to announce them and tell about them, but they are more than I can tell.
David though seems overwhelmed at this moment to spell out, to list all the wonderful things the LORD his God has done for him and for Israel. The LORD has made many wonderful plans, starting with our salvation in Gen. 3, the blessed seed in Gen. 18, the Exodus, and the conquering of the Promised Land. On top of that, there is the future salvation He has prepared for us in Christ Jesus in the world to come. And these are just some I can roll off my tongue. David prophetically looks into the ministry of his Descendant, Jesus and says, “they are more than I can tell, foretelling the end of John’s Gospel where he says, all the books in the world could not contain everything that Jesus has done. Yet we do our best when we confess the Creeds of the Church.
Heavenly Father, open our lips that we may sing Your praise and glorify Your Son Jesus Christ with a new song extolling how You have heard our prayers and answered them as we have put our trust in You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
