#DailyDevotion While We May Suffer Much In Life, We Will Praise The LORD Forever.
Psalm 41 5My enemies talk evil of me: “When will he die and his name disappear?” 6When one of them comes to see me, he tells lies. He keeps all the gossip in mind, and then goes outside and tells others. 7All who hate me whisper together about me. They mean to harm me, saying: 8“May a deadly disease be poured out on him; may he lie there and never get up again!”
While many people early on sang David’s praise, even after he became king he still had enemies. Some were of the tribe of Benjamin who were loyal to Saul. Some were of his own family, like Absalom, his son. Based on the question here in verse five, it seems it may have been towards the end of David’s life. There’s a lot of politicking going on where there is power to be had or lost. So people who may seem like friends really aren’t. They are there for the power and gifts to be gotten by you and they are there to observe how they might get rid of you.
We see here some are saving up gossip to spread lies and tells half-truths to others in order to discredit and weaken him. Even worse, some are praying curses upon David.
9Even My friend whom I trusted, who ate My food, gives Me a hard kick.
David may have experienced this in his life but more importantly it points to the future of the New David, Shoot of the stump of Jesse. Jesus experienced all the above verses during His visible ministry among us. The Pharisees, Scribes and Sadducees were constantly listening in on Him to find something to charge Him with. They gossiped about Him and tried to weaken His hold on the people because they felt like they were losing power over the people. But this verse really is a stick in the craw. Judas, Jesus’ friend, who kept all the money and ate Jesus’ food betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. While Jesus knew this was going to happen, it still hurt Him as it would us.
Who among us has had times experienced this? When we do, we can take comfort knowing our LORD and our God has experienced this for us in the flesh and knows what we are going through.
10But You, O LORD, be kind to me; help me get up and I will pay them back. 11Then I will know You are pleased with me, if my enemy doesn’t triumph over me.
Jesus experienced the Father’s help at the resurrection. He got up out of the grave. He knew He pleased the Father by His suffering and death when His enemies did not triumph over Him as He came out of the grave victoriously. Jesus will also have us rise out of our graves as He ushers His kingdom into this world. Then those who have not repented of their evil deeds will be paid back in the fires of Gehenna, the Lake of Fire. While we suffered only a little while in this life, they will suffer for eternity. While they rejoiced for a little while over our trials and trouble, we will rejoice before the LORD our God forever.
12As for me, You have taken hold of me in my innocence and have set me before You forever. 13Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting! So be it, yes, so be it!
Jesus sat at the right hand of God and we sit with Him on His throne now and forever. Praise be to our LORD Jesus Christ and the Father forever and ever. Amen.
Heavenly Father, help us to see our fate and the fate of those who hate us so we may not lose hope in this life but give you thanks and praise forever. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
