#DailyDevotion The Word Of The LORD Accomplishes Its Purpose–What Is That?
Isaiah 55:10–13
10As rain and snow come down from heaven and don’t go back again but water the ground and make it produce and grow and give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11so will My Word be that I speak. It will not return to Me empty but it will accomplish what I want and achieve what I had in mind. 12You will go out with joy and be led out in peace. The mountains and the hills will break into shouts of joy before you, and all the trees in the field will happily applaud. 13Where there was a thornbush, a cypress will grow. Where there was a brier, a myrtle will grow. And this will honor the LORD and be an everlasting sign that will not be cut down.”
This passage is often tied together with some sort of “mission” festival. There is a good reason for it. The LORD says here, “11so will My Word be that I speak. It will not return to Me empty but it will accomplish what I want and achieve what I had in mind.” This of course is to encourage you to spread the word of the LORD either personally or to supply the needs of a missionary to go and spread the word of the LORD. It is a good passage to convey that message. But I ask, what is the Word the LORD speaks that goes out?
Earlier in the same chapter it is said, ““Oh, come to the water, all you who are thirsty! You who have no money, come, buy and eat. Have no money come buy and eat, Come and buy grain without money, and wine and milk that costs nothing. 2Why are you spending money for what isn’t bread and your earnings for what doesn’t satisfy?” Here we have an invitation to the wedding feasts of the LORD. Many think they need to do something to be worthy or to earn our way into the kingdom of heaven. But the LORD wants to know why are you trying to do that. It is a gift. This is why your works never satify your concience. They are empty in and of themselves.
The LORD also says, “Search for the Lord 6Search for the LORD while He can be found; call on Him while He is near. 7Every wicked man should give up his way, and every evil man what he’s thinking. If he comes back to the LORD, He will be merciful to him, and to our God, He will forgive him ever so much.” Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God has come and provided a way into the kingdom of God. He is the LORD we are searching for. We are called here to give up, surrender our old ways of doing things and our thinking. Jesus is the LORD who is merciful and who forgives so much for the sake of his innocent suffering and death. He calls us to come back to him.
This is the Word of the LORD that goes out and accomplishes what he intends. As we hear this Word of the LORD and it creates in us repentance and faith, it leads unto into God’s kingdom with joy and peace. It brings us into the New Heavens and New Earth where thornbushes turn into a cypress and a brier and myrtle grows. It brings back Paradise for us to live in when Christ returns.
Heavenly Father, may the your word of repentance and forgiveness convert our hearts so we may turn to Christ and live and enter into your kingdom. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
