#DailyDevotion The Shelter Of The Almighty Will Cover Us

Rev 7:13-17  Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?”  (14)  I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.  (15)  “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.  (16)  They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat.  (17)  For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Who are all these people? Well they are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation. Now we often think, because certain Christians can’t distinguish between something literal and a vision, that there is some seven year countdown to the end of the world, but there is not. It is somewhat of a popular view, particularly in evangelical America. However, the great tribulation began with Jesus’ death (If they do this when the tree is green what will they do when the wood is dry). We see almost immediately after Pentecost the Church begins to suffer persecution. These are all the saints, the whole Church. It is the whole church symbolized by the 144,000.

They have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. Everyone who has been baptized and believed in the Lord Jesus Christ has washed their robes in his blood. The blood he covers us with, with which he poured upon the mercy seat of the Almighty and sprinkled us with, giving a clear, clean conscience before God, makes our robes white, clean. The dirty deeds we once had done, which stained our hearts and our minds has been washed away.

When we are resurrected wearing our white robes, we will be before the throne of God our Father forever, serving him day and night. Doesn’t say what we’ll be doing, but it will be better than our best day in this age. We will sheltered by his presence. Even as the Israelites were covered by the cloud which sheltered them in the wilderness, the Lord’s presence will shelter us.

Now verses 16 and 17 key for understanding here. These show us this is an end of the world description. Verse 16 repeated almost word for word in Rev. 21:4 and verse 17 is repeated in verses 4 and 6 of the same chapter. These verses also bring up the wilderness experience of the Israelites where the Lord covered them and provided them with food and water.

Now the river that makes glad the city of God here is the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. For they give us their Life. God wipes away all our tears here, the tears we shed for those we love who refused the gift of God and the tears we shed because of our tears and our lives wasted by sin, selfishness and our own self satisfaction. He wipes them all away because all things are new now. We have been freed from sin, death and the power of the devil. We are free to live for God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ now. Let us try to live in that day now by the grace of God.

Heavenly Father, you pour upon your children the blood of Jesus, cleansing us from our sins and giving us a clear conscience before your throne. Grant unto us the gift of perseverance so on the day of our resurrection we may be gathered with all your saints and rejoice in your presence forevermore. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
