Isaiah 7:10–14

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz,  “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.”  But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.”  And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also?  Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

The Assyrians were beating everyone up on the middle east. They had taken Syria and plummeted and exiled Israel and now they were coming for Jerusalem. Ahaz had been a bad boy, worshipping false gods besides the Lord, even offering up a son as a sacrifice. He had started worshipping the god of the Syrians because they had whipped his butt (because the Lord was upset for he was worshipping other gods) and he thought he Syrian god had beaten the Lord. It was at such a time the Lord sent Isaiah the prophet.

Isaiah told Ahaz to pick a sign, any sign, nothing too great or too small, but Ahaz didn’t trust the Lord. He thought it was a trap and he refused. But the Lord wanted to bring comfort to his people. So the Lord himself provided a sign, the virgin would conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel. Now Immanuel is God with us.

This was to be in fulfillment of what the Lord had threatened the serpent back in the garden. The seed of the woman would crush his head. The old serpent has been after women, trying to kill them in childbirth and convincing them to kill their own children in hopes of getting rid of the threat, but God’s plans would not be thwarted. It would be the seed of a woman, not the seed of a man and of a woman. So, it will be virgin that would conceive and bear a son. As the angel told Mary, this would be by the power of the Holy Spirit. If the Lord can form a woman from the rib of a man, it is nothing to form a man of the seed of a woman.

Now this virgin would indeed be the Virgin Mary. She would conceive in her womb that which is of the Holy Ghost, namely the Lord of Israel, the Lord of Hosts, the Creator of all that is seen and unseen and therefore would fulfill the name Immanuel, God with us. For this child would indeed be God with us in the flesh. As the Lord had tabernacle in the ark of the covenant and in the tent of meeting, as he had resided with his name in the temple of Solomon, so now he would tabernacle with us, as one of us, in our fallen flesh.

In this flesh, Immanuel would offer himself up, the only child sacrifice ever ordained by the Father but as a grown man. He would offer himself up willingly for the sin of the world to redeem the world and mankind from the slavery of sin and death to which we had sold ourselves into in the garden. Immanuel, Jesus, would rise though to everlasting life, offering us, you, this gift of eternal life through faith in him. This is the gift and the love of Christmas.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for sending us salvation through the Virgin by joining your son to her seed and providing an acceptable sacrifice for our sin. Grant us faith in your son’s work on the cross so we may receive the gift of eternal life by his hand. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
