#DailyDevotion The Mercies Of The LORD Jesus Are New Every Morning
Lamentations 3:22-25 22 The LORD is gracious; we’re not completely wiped out because His mercies haven’t come to an end; 23 they are new every morning — great is Your faithfulness. 24 I can say “the LORD is my Portion; that’s why I find hope in Him.” 25 The LORD is good to those who have confidence in Him, to anyone who seeks Him.
Lamentations was written by Jeremiah who prophesied during before, during and after Jerusalem’s fall to the Babylonians. What the LORD revealed to him as to what he was going to do to the kingdom of Judah because of their unfaithfulness was horrific. Such is the impetus for the book of Lamentations which is full of laments. Yet in the midst of laments we have in the middle of the book a little ray of sunshine that sustained those who still had faith or who would return to faith having repented of their unbelief.
The LORD is gracious. Jeremiah is reminded of the name that the LORD revealed to Moses in Exodus 34:6-7: “the LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, slow to get angry, rich in love and faithfulness, 7continuing to show mercy to thousands, forgiving wrong, rebellion, and sin, without treating it as innocent, but disciplining children and children’s children to the third and fourth generation for the sins of their fathers.” Even though Israel and Judah had been faithless he believed the LORD’s name which reveals him being rich in faithfulness. Because the LORD is gracious, Judah would not be completely wiped out. There would be a remnant that would prosper in captivity and would return to the land to rebuild.
The mercies of the LORD have not come to an end. They are new every morning. Every day is a new day with the LORD. They had a chance to repent as long as it was today and to put their trust in the LORD. The name of the LORD reveals that he does not let sin go unnoticed. He will let the temporal punishments, the consequences of their sins fall upon their heads. Yet the LORD God allows them in his mercies to turn to him for forgiveness, life and salvation.
Jeremiah could hope in the midst of the horror of the destruction of Jerusalem, the Temple and the exile because of the LORD’s promise that the LORD himself was his portion, his inheritance. The loss of the things of the world is nothing compared to the loss of the LORD himself.
So we too can take great comfort today and every day that is today the LORD will be gracious, merciful, and faithful to his promises to us in Christ Jesus. When we take up the promise here in verse 25, “The LORD is good to those who have confidence in Him, to anyone who seeks Him.” Jesus Christ is this LORD Jeremiah speaks of here. When we turn from our sins and look to Jesus with confidence in the mercy of God and his graciousness, the Father will indeed shower us with his mercies and kindness. Jesus makes us co-heirs with him of God. Jesus is our portion. With him, we can be confident of living in his kingdom which is righteous and has no end. We can look through our trials and tribulations and laments and see Jesus who is our light at the end of the tunnel and know better things are coming. In Jesus the name of the LORD is fulfilled for us now and unto life everlasting.
Heavenly Father, gift us faith to look confidently to you through Christ Jesus that we may experience your mercies and graciousness today and every day that is today. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Tank you. Lam 3.22 is my confirmation verse. It (and the verses around jelped me lightly when I had cancer.
Greetings to Christina who helped me to install the new office of the French Lutheran Hour in Sept. 2993.
Glad it the word comforted you. She gives her greetings as well.
