#DailyDevotion So Who Are You Praying For?

#DailyDevotion So Who Are You Praying For?

Eph. 6:18 To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

“To that end” to what end? Standing firm. To the end of standing firm then, keep alert with all perseverance. We keep alert by constantly being in the Word of God, wherein the Spirit does his work on us. We continue where his word is, which is the gathering of the saints who hear the word read, taught and preached. We partake of the Holy Sacrament which feeds us the very body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who in the sacrament, through the forgiveness of sins, gives us his strength and might.

Perseverance also includes prayer. Paul concluded the previous section with praying in the Spirit, that is with the Word of God. But now he directs that prayer: making supplications for all the saints and for him. Our prayers should not be selfish prayers. We need to pray for others. Selfishness is what got the world into this mess in the first place. Part of our program of Christian living, if you will, is not being selfish. Paul tells us to look into the interest of others. We have the command to love one another. Our prayers should reflect that. So know and understand what your fellow saints are going through and pray, intercede for them, for their lives. Pray the Lord would keep them faithful. Pray they would persevere in the faith under all circumstances. Pray the Lord would fulfill our their needs of body and soul.

Now while Paul no longer needs your prayers, your pastors do. Pray the same thing for them. Pray their lives may reflect the love of Christ. Pray also that the Lord would give them the gifts necessary for their office. Pray they would be given insight into what they need to teach and understanding of the scriptures. Pray they may be given wisdom and understanding of the world. Finally pray they may preach the word of Christ boldly without fear of men but in the fear of the Lord.

In doing these things we will indeed be keeping alert with all perseverance. The Lord will be with you with his word. He will bless your prayers and fulfill his word of promise in you.

Almighty God and Father, open our lips that we may declare your praise, intercede with your word for all your saints and for those you have given us to teach us your word that the enemy would be beaten back and we may all stand our ground until you send us your Son Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
