#DailyDevotion Put Your Trust In The Name Of Jesus, The King Of Israel
Psalm 20 6Now I’m sure the LORD will give His anointed a victory as He answers him from His holy heaven with mighty deeds by His right hand. 7For some it’s chariots; for others, horses; but we will boast in the name of the LORD our God. 8They will totter to their knees and fall, but we will rise and stand up. (People:) 9O LORD, save! May the King answer us when we call.
Having heard the promises or blessings from the previous verses, David gains confidence the LORD will give him a victory as the LORD answers him from his holy heaven. Similarly, Jesus, who also is the LORD’s anointed may go forth from the Garden confident the LORD has heard his prayer as Judas rounds the corner with the troops and that while he may have to suffer the cross, his Father will not abandon him in the grave but will fulfill His promise to not let his body see corruption, as he will most certainly be raised on the third day.
Many kings, presidents and prime ministers boast of and look to their tools of war: tanks, aircraft, destroyers, submarines, nuclear capabilities and troops. They trust these things to keep them safe. David and Jesus trust in the name of the LORD their God. When David faced Goliath, he did not trust in his sling, which was a pretty accurate and deadly weapon. He trusted in the name of the LORD and called upon it to give him victory. When he went forth in war against the Philistines and other Canaanite armies, David put his trust in the name of the LORD.
When Jesus faced the soldiers from the temple, his trust was in the name of the LORD. As he stood in the Sanhedrin, before Pilate and before Herod, Jesus put his trust in the name of the LORD, his Father. Hanging on the cross, suffering, being insulted for trusting in God, Jesus still put his trust in the name of the LORD. The LORD did not disappoint. He raised him from the dead on the third day and sat him at his right hand in heaven.
All the powers of the world will totter to their knees and fall on the Last Day. The book of Revelation makes it very clear in several places when the great men of this world gather the peoples of this world together to fight against the Church and Jesus Christ, when they see his glory and him coming down from heaven with all his angels, they will cower and beg the mountains to fall on them so they don’t have to face him. On that day, Jesus tells us, his disciples and followers to look up because our salvation has come upon us. Those who trusted and believed on him when they died will rise and stand up from their graves and enter the kingdom, the reign of God and his Christ in the new creation.
“O LORD save,” may be similar to “God save the king” in British circles. If the king is saved then so are his subjects. Jesus is our king. He has been saved from death and the grave. If he has conquered the grave then we his loyal subjects will join him in his resurrection as he raises us to eternal life on that day. “May the King answer us when we call,” is an appeal to God. In the Old Testament, the LORD is King of Israel. David serves as king in the LORD’s place. Jesus though is the King, the LORD, in the flesh, of David’s seed. Jesus is the King of Israel who hears our cries for help, deliverance, and salvation. As we call to the Father in his name, we can be certain He will save and deliver us from sin, from the power of the devil, and from death and the grave. We can be certain He saves us so we may live and reign with him.
Heavenly Father, give us your Holy Spirit that we may trust not in worldly wealth and power but only in the name of your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ, and by that name achieve salvation. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
