#DailyDevotion Open Your Mouth & Sing To God Praises.
Psalm 33 1-11 Shout happily in the LORD, O righteous people! You devout people, it is beautiful to praise. 2Praise the LORD with a lyre; praise Him with a ten-stringed lute. 3Sing to Him a new song; play well on the instruments with happy shouting. 4The LORD’s Word is right, and all His works are faithful. 5He loves what is right and just. The earth is full of the LORD’s goodness. 6The LORD made the heavens by His Word, and all the stars by the Breath of His mouth. 7He gathers the water of the sea in a jar and puts the deep waters in storage. 8The whole earth should fear the LORD, and all who live in the world be in awe of Him. 9He spoke and it was, He ordered and it came into being. 10The LORD makes the plans of the nations fail; He hinders them in what they propose to do. 11But what the LORD plans stands firm forever; what He proposes is for all generations.
It is unfortunate it seems we have lost the gift of being taught to sing. It must have been a long time ago because most of congregation is over 70 and with the exception of a few hymns here and there everyone sings with gusto because they are fairly easy to follow but they don’t read music like perhaps their parents once did. It seems to only have gotten worse over the last century or so. Even with popular music I rarely hear kids bursting out in song except for the occasional chorus. Well, the Psalmist here has called us here to burst forth in shouting happily in the LORD. He calls us to praise the LORD with musical instruments and sing to Him a new song. What is going on that he calls us to break forth in praise?
First we are called to praise Him for many of his attributes. The LORD’s Word is right and His works are faithful. He loves what is right and just. The earth is full of the LORD’s goodness. Yes, we may always look to God’s Word to see what is good and right and to find out what is right and just. The world doesn’t know what it is talking about half the time and when it does sound somewhat right whatever rightness it has is perverted by its selfish desires. Don’t trust your inner voice, even that is perverted by sin. But can count on the Word of God at all times.
We praise the LORD for creation. I find it interesting the interplay in verse 6 with Word and Breath. When we speak that is breathing. The Breath of the LORD here is the Spirit of the LORD. So the Word and Spirit of the LORD are always together. So we see in Genesis the Spirit brooding over the waters and the LORD speaking forth creation. In baptism we see both the Word of God and the Spirit of God joined to the water of regeneration. With the might of His Word and Spirit all things were created and are sustained by Him and we are born of God. Many of us have been praising the LORD as we have seen images of creation in distance with the Webb telescope and we marvel at them.
We praise the LORD who makes plans and those plans come to pass. He raises up nations for His purpose and tears them down for His purposes. Many kings thought their accomplishments were their own but the LORD showed them who was working behind them when He took their favor from them. Everything in history happens for the good of God’s people, to grow and sustain them. As we see in the Word, God’s plans do not fail. You can always count on them. His Church will grow and remain eternally in the LORD Jesus Christ.
Heavenly Father, you with the Son and the Holy Spirit deserve our praise and blessing at all times. Open our lips that we may sing your praise through your Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
I had not thought about the fact that my grandchildren don’t sing. The parents, our children, did not teach them how to read music!
