#DailyDevotion May The Word Run Well

2 Thess. 3 Finally, my fellow Christians, pray for us that the Lord’s Word will run well and win glory as it did among you 2and we’ll be rescued from wrong-minded and wicked people. Not everyone has faith. 3But the Lord is faithful. He will strengthen you and protect you against the evil one. 4We are certain in the Lord you are doing and will be doing what we order you to do. 5And may the Lord lead you to realize how God loves you and how patiently Christ suffered.

What Paul asks the congregations to pray for is something we should keep in mind and pray for as well, for our congregations and pastors and for the Church at large. One of the things we should pray for is the Lord’s Word will run well and win glory as it has among us. Well for a lot of us we probably should be praying his Word will run well and win glory among us. It is a prayer for missions and missionaries and for all who speak the word of Christ. God does not need our prayers nor will God’s will be hindered because we don’t pray. But the Lord God has so ordered things that we work with him to accomplish his will. He has chosen to have us participate with him in saving mankind. Our God is a God of means, instrumentality. He uses the creation he has made and the creatures in it to do his will. You are one of those creatures. God wants to share his glory and glory in us. We, as his children, should want to be participants in that. It’s kind of like Martin Luther’s explanation of the Lord’s prayer—God’s will is done even without our prayer but we pray it may be done among us.

So we pray his Word may run well and particularly among us, here in our place. May the Lord indeed put his Word upon our lips and so move in our lives that through word and deed the glory of Jesus Christ is seen and heard among us so the people around us may see, hear and believe in the Good News Jesus Christ is the savior of the world. He has won eternal life for them and offers it for free among them. He has conquered sin, death and the power of the devil so they may repent of their sins and live a life worthy of the calling which the Father calls them. When this happens Christ is gloried and the Father is glorified. But again, not only in our place but wherever the Word may go, may it run well and win glory.

You, your pastors and the missionaries of the Church need our prayers to be rescued from wrong-headed and wicked people. We often make the mistake of thinking everyone has faith and are good and decent people, particularly in the Church. But as St. Paul says, “Not everyone has faith.” As such, they are still under the power of the devil who wants to gain us back to himself and wants to cut short his losses to Christ. He will use such people to hinder the message of Jesus from getting out. He will use them to persecute and even kill those who preach repentance and the forgiveness of sins in Jesus’ name. Praying God’s Word is our weapon against him and his agents.

Nevertheless the Lord is faithful. We have his promise that no one can drag out of his hand or the Father’s hand. We have his promise he will strengthen and protect us from the evil one. Because this is so we pray this in the Lord’s Prayer. We can be certain the Spirit of the Lord is moving us to will and do what he wants us to be doing.

As we walk in this life, through faith in the promises of Jesus, we will realize how much God does love us and how patiently Christ suffered Just as Christ suffered, we too will participate in his sufferings. As we participate in his sufferings, we know he the love God has toward us in Christ by having him take our sufferings upon himself in his flesh. This is the meaning of “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” He gave him to suffer death, even death upon a cross to redeem and save us from our sins and death.

Merciful God and Father, may the Word of Christ run well among us and into the distant lands that the people you have made may hear, repent and believe it to the end they are joined to Christ and us in baptism, thereby glorifying Christ and you and the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
