#DailyDevotion Jesus Is Your Savior & God In The Day Of Trouble
Psalm 42 6…When I’m so discouraged I will remember You from the land of Jordan, the peaks of Hermon, and at the hill Mizar, 7where the floods resound and the waterfalls roar, where all Your billows and waves passed over me.
In the previous verses, David was asking himself why he was so discouraged. Then he turned to the LORD for help. These verses continue this stream of thought. When he is discouraged, he will remember the LORD. The following verses are a little unclear. On the one hand it seems as if he will remember the LORD whenever he is in these places. But verse seven seems to be in parallel to verse 6. If that is the case, then the troubles he is experiencing in verse 7 give meaning to verse 6. None of this is good stuff. So what David is saying here is when he is discouraged, when he is overwhelmed with life, whenever, whatever, and wherever, he will remember the LORD.
To remember the LORD is to remember all His great acts to deliver Israel from all its enemies. It is to remember how the LORD provided for them in all trials and tribulations He brought them to and through. We would do well to remember Jesus Christ on the cross when life in this fallen world strikes and we are discouraged and afraid. The cross of Christ reminds us of the love of the LORD and that as He suffered, we too will suffer with Him. Suffering, trials and tribulations all end at the resurrection and give way to glory, power, might and everlasting life.
8During the day the LORD sent His kindness; and at night His song was with me; my prayer was to the God of my life.
When in doubt, it is good to look to the LORD our God and recognize the goodness and kindness He has sent our way. Sometimes it is difficult to see when grief overwhelms us. When we belong to Him, these things are there though difficult to see when our eyes are full of tears. David though is able to see them and is able to sing of the goodness of the LORD. Seeing the kindness of the LORD, David is able to open his mouth in prayer.
9I will ask God, “My Rock, why did You forget me? Why must I go mourning while the enemy oppresses me?” 10My enemies insult me — it’s a crushing of my bones — by asking me all day long, “Where is your God?”
David is still on talking terms with God in his suffering. His Rock is Jesus Christ. Paul tells us as much. He is our Rock as well. It’s ok to ask Him where is He and when is He going to act to save us from our current struggles. Jesus, though, in His flesh, during His suffering in the Garden, in the courts, on the cross prays with us as our enemies, the devil and his minions, taunt us with, “Where is your God?” The empty tomb is our response.
11Why am I so discouraged, and why am I in such turmoil? I must look to God for help, and praise Him as my Savior and my God.
Why do we get so discourage and are in such turmoil with all the great and wonderful promises of Jesus Christ our Savior? Our sinful flesh is always fighting against our faith. We, with David, must look to Jesus for help and praise Him as our Savior and our God. He will not disappoint you.
Heavenly Father, look down with kindness upon us. Give us faith to see all Your kindness in the day of trouble. Send forth Your Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Savior and God when we are in despair, so we may praise Him as our Savior and our God. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
