#DailyDevotion Jesus Is YHWH’s Holy One
Is. 29:17-24 17In just a little while will not Lebanon turn into a garden-land and the garden-land be considered a forest? 18On that day the deaf will hear the words written in a book, and the blind coming out of their gloom and darkness will see. 19The humble will find a new joy in the LORD, and the poorest of people will delight in the Holy One of Israel. 20The tyrant will be gone, the scoffer will be finished, and all who look for ways to do wrong will be destroyed — 21those who accuse others of being sinners and try to trap those who uphold justice in court and with empty argument take away the rights of a righteous man. 22The LORD, who freed Abraham, says this about the people of Jacob: “Jacob will no longer be ashamed; nor will Jacob’s face turn pale. 23When he or his children see what I’ve done among them, they will treat My name as holy, and treat the Holy One of Jacob as holy, and stand in awe of the God of Israel. 24Then those whose spirits went astray will know and understand, and those who criticized will receive instruction.”
The prophecy begin at the beginning of chapter 29. It speaks of bringing Jerusalem low by her enemies because she had rebelled against the LORD her God. Not it is not clear whether this would be from the Assyrians, the Babylonians or the Romans, though the Babylonians or Romans are the most likely candidates.
Then it seems the prophecy looks further into the future for a minute where it looks more like Revelation chapter 18 or 19 where the nations of the world take their stand against the Lamb and his Church. Then the LORD seems to backtrack to the time of Christ in which Jesus makes some of these same accusations of the leaders of his day, 13 The Lord says: “These people come near Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far away from Me, and their way of worshiping Me is with rules developed by men. 14 This is why I will again do something wonderful with these people, something wonderful and marvelous. The wisdom of their wise men will perish, and the intelligence of their intelligent men will vanish.”
Then here starting with verse 17 we look to world after the resurrection of what we can look forward to living at at the return of Christ but also during the time Christ ministry until know. So we look forward to the curse from the Garden being removed and the earth renewed which the garden and forest refers to. During Christ’s ministry and now through the Word of his Gospel, the deaf hear, the blind see, the humble find joy in the LORD and poorest delight in the Holy One of Israel. The Holy One of Israel is Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Then the prophet looks again into the new heavens and new earth where righteousness reigns. It will be a time where everything is made right again. The LORD’s name will be kept holy and the Holy One (Jesus) will be regarded as holy and people will stand in awe of the God of Israel. You don’t have to wait for some of this. Now you can find new joy in the LORD Jesus and delight in him. Now you can regard God’s Name and the Holy One (Jesus) as holy. Now you can stand in awe of the God of Israel who has provided for you such a great salvation in Jesus Christ.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the salvation provided us in Christ Jesus, your son. Grant us faith to take joy and delight in him now and forever. Give us your Holy Spirit so we may rightly regard your Name and your Holy One as holy and stand in awe of you Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
