#DailyDevotion Jesus Is The Word Of God
Heb. 4 12God’s Word is living and active. It cuts better than any two-edged sword. It pierces until it divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow. And it can judge thoughts and purposes of the heart. 13No creature can hide from Him. Everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to Whom we must give account.
We should remember this section began at the beginning of chapter 3 and so should be read in light of the theme, Jesus is better than Moses. Moses only delivered the Word of God. Jesus is the Word of God in the flesh. We should take into account then John’s words from his gospel: “IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3Everything was made by Him, and not one thing that was made was made without Him.” “14And the Word became flesh and lived among us for a time and we saw His glory, the glory of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” These words identify Jesus as the Word of God in the flesh. Then there are these words, “4In Him was life, and the Life was the Light of men. 5The Light is shining in the dark, and the darkness has not put it out.” “9The true Light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” In ch. 11. of John Jesus says, 25“I am the Resurrection and the Life. Anyone who believes in Me will live even if he dies. In ch. 14:6 John writes, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” So Jesus, God’s Word, is living and active because He is Life itself.
Jesus, as the Word of God, comes to us in the Scriptures which are the word of God. Since they are His Word, they share in His nature. The words of Scripture impart the life and light of the Word of God. It is living and active. As Isaiah prophesied in ch. 55, “11so will My Word be that I speak. It will not return to Me empty but it will accomplish what I want and achieve what I had in mind.”
In Matt. 10 Jesus says, 34“Don’t think that I came to bring peace to the earth. I didn’t come to bring peace but a sword. 35I came to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” In Revelation 1 it is written, “16In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp, double-edged sword, . . .” The Word of God, “It pierces until it divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow. And it can judge thoughts and purposes of the heart.” This is to say when God’s Word is read, spoken or preached, it reaches deep into each and everyone one of it. It judges the very core of our being. It exposes the things done in faith and the acts of unbelief. It shows us our motivations for everything we think, say and do. We may not always want to admit it. Sometimes we may be so hardened though we may not understand it and then we ignore it to our own detriment.
Jesus, the Word of God, is the Judge of the living and the dead. The living are those who possess His life. The dead are those who do not possess His life. Everything is uncovered before Him to whom we must give account. This should give us a little trepidation as we work out our salvation. Are we just sitting on our faith or is it living and active like the Word that gave birth to it? Are we living lives contrary to that Word? Remember our works are tested with fire and only that which is born of faith will we take with us into the world to come.
Merciful God and Father, give us Your Holy Spirit when we hear Your Word so we may do those things that please you and avoid those things which will not last, to the glory of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our LORD. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
