#DailyDevotion Jesus Is The Wonderful Name YHWH Makes For Himself
Isaiah 6310 But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit. So He turned to be their enemy and fought against them. 11Then His people remembered the days of old and Moses: Where is He Who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of His flock? Where is He Who put within them His Holy Spirit, 12 Who performed with His wonderful arm at the right hand of Moses and divided the water before them to make an everlasting name for Himself, 13 Who led them through deep waters without stumbling, like a horse going through the desert? 14 Like cattle going down to the valley, the LORD’s Spirit brought them to their rest.” Yes, You led Your people to make a wonderful name for Yourself.
The Israelites and the Jews both rebelled against the LORD their King and grieve His Holy Spirit. Therefore the LORD removed his Holy Spirit from them who put a hedge about them to protect them from their enemies. If they were going to serve their enemies gods, then well they would serve those gods’ people. So he first sent the Assyrians to exile Israel and then later he would send the Babylonians to bring them into exile.
While they were in exile in Babylon they remembered the days of old and Moses. There they remembered the LORD who had brought them out of Egypt like a shepherd through the Red Sea. They remembered how the LORD had poured forth his Spirit upon their elders in the wilderness. There they remembered how the LORD’s arm delivered them from all their enemies in the wilderness, how he parted the Jordan river for them and settled them in the Land of Promise. The LORD had given them rest when they had put their trust in his word. He delivered them to make a wonderful name for Himself among the nations. The LORD brought them out of Egypt and settled them again in their own land.
Yet, they were a stiff-necked and stubborn people. While they did turn to any other gods’ name or image again they turned from his word and started teaching it in a different spirit than what he had given them. He sent the Greeks and then the Romans to punish them to correct them and bring them to repentance. He sent his servant John the Baptist to call them to repentance to prepare the way for the LORD. Then he sent the LORD, Jesus Christ. Many repented of their former ways, believed on Jesus Christ is their eternal king. Many did not do this. The Romans took away their land and temple again. But for those who trusted in Jesus Christ, the LORD, he gave them a promise of a New Heaven and a New Earth, his everlasting kingdom and put his Holy Spirit in them.
The LORD made a name wonderful for himself and that name is Jesus. Paul writes, 9“That is why God also exalted Him up on high and gave Him the name above every other name 10that at the name of JESUS everyone in heaven and on earth and under the earth should kneel, lland everyone should confess, “JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!” and so glorify God the Father.” Yes Jesus Christ is the wonderful name the LORD made for himself for his people and among the nations. In that name they should put their trust and in that name receive within themselves God’s Holy Spirit and eternal life.
Almighty God and Father, you have made a wonderful name for yourself in your Son Jesus Christ. May his name always be glorified among those who follow him and whom you have place it to the glory of your holy name. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
