#DailyDevotion Jesus Is The Seed & Horn Of David

Psalm 132 10For Your servant David’s sake don’t turn away from Your anointed. 11With an oath the LORD promised David – He certainly will not fail to keep it: “I will put your own offspring on your throne. If your sons keep My covenant and My written truths that I teach them, their descendants also will sit on Your throne forever.”

The psalmist here appeals to the word from 1 Kings 8:25, quoting from Solomon’s prayer. However, Solomon’s most likely is appealing to the LORD’s promise to David in 2 Sam. 7:12 which doesn’t exactly say this. Perhaps it is not from this word of God Solomon appeals to. One could see how Solomon could get this understanding from the words of those verses from 2 Sam. Though. The words from Nathan seem to point to Solomon, as he does build a house for the LORD. When Nathan says, “16Your royal house will stand firm before Me forever, and your throne will stand firm forever,” it seems to imply a dynasty. The LORD also in these words says He will discipline David’s sons when they sin. However, I still think Solomon, perhaps, heard another word which he and this psalm quote: “If your sons keep My covenant and My written truths that I teach them, their descendants also will sit on Your throne forever.” David is promised his seed’s (singular) would sit on his throne forever. That seed is Jesus Christ who has ascended to the right hand of God who rules and has authority over everything forever.

So there is the appeal to keep the anointed sons of David who would be kings. They have a conditional promise, “if your son keep My covenant.” We of course can see through the history of Israel they did not and the throne was taken away from them by the Babylonians. Zerubbabel, a descendant of David, only ruled over Judah as a governor of the Persians. We don’t really have any records of further seeds of David ruling over Judah in the rest of the Old Testament. We can see in Maccabees, they were not ruling at that time. But the LORD Jesus Christ has kept the LORD’s covenant and in His blood established a New Covenant in which our sins are forgiven and forgotten and we are now God’s people.

13The LORD chose Zion, wanting it for His home: 14“Here is where I will stay forever. Here I will be on My throne because that is what I want. 15I will certainly bless her food and satisfy her poor with bread. 16I will dress her priests in salvation, and her people, whom I love, will shout happily. 17Then I will make a Horn sprout up for David and will prepare a Lamp for My anointed. 18I will cover His enemies with shame as with a garment, but on Him His crown will sparkle.”

As the pilgrims ascend Mt. Zion, they remember the LORD chose this place to set His throne and footstool name the Ark and the Temple. Here He planned to be with His people forever. His blessing was with them if they obeyed all the terms of the covenant. For if Israel obeyed the words of the covenant, the poor, the widow, the orphan, the foreigners at the gate and the priests would have all that they need and more. We see from Israel’s history, they did not always do this so these people were often oppressed and sold into slavery instead of being taken care of. The priests were to be dressed in salvation and the people were shouting happily. The priest would be performing all the sacrifices necessary for peace and instructing the people in the way of the LORD.

Jesus is the Horn which sprouts up for David. He is the One given the Light of the Spirit fully. On the Last Day all His enemies will be covered with shame and He will shine before us in glory. Not only that, but we will participate in His glory and reign with Him forever. We indeed are the priest dressed in salvation as Peter tells us in his epistles.

Heavenly Father, give us eyes to see Jesus as the promised seed and horn of David who rules forever and let us submit ourselves to His rule and be His holy, royal priests who serve before Him forever. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
