#DailyDevotion Jesus Is The River & Tree Of Life

Rev 22:1-6  Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb  (2)  through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.  (3)  No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.  (4)  They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.  (5)  And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.  (6)  And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”

Psa 36:8-9  They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights.  (9)  For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.

Psa 46:4-5  There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.  (5)  God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.

Eze 47:1  Then he brought me back to the door of the temple, and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar.

As you can see there is nothing really new in Revelation that isn’t taught elsewhere in Scripture. What is this river that gives life and makes glad the city of God, i.e. the Lord’s holy people? Joh 19:34 “But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.” The water of life is the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. The water is the life, it is his blood that gives us his life and feeds us through the tree of life which is his body. It is Christ Jesus himself that is imaged to us here in Revelation. He is the river, he is the tree, he is the leaves and fruit that bring the nations healing and feeds them.

Already, we participate in the river of life and the tree of life through baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Now it is hidden from our sight. At that time we shall see him with our own eyes and know him, Jesus, even as we are fully known by him. While we may wonder about some church members and they may wonder about us, at this time, that will be no more. For we will all be wholly and fully sanctified by our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. There will be and we will no longer be hypocrites. We will be what the Lord and what we have always wanted to be, the holy children of God.

The Lord has placed his name upon our foreheads at baptism. He is our God and we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. We will see the Lord, face to face, even as Moses did in the tabernacle, no, even more closely and perfectly and completely, we will look upon the glory of God and bear its weight in and upon ourselves. We will worship the Lord God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as he has always wanted and as we have always wanted. We will finally bear the image of God perfectly even has the Image of God, Jesus, has born our sins and iniquities in this age.

The Father and Jesus who are the true light shall be our light in that day. Even as darkness is light to the Lord, living their light we will know no darkness. We shall simply reign with our Lord Jesus Christ creation, have dominion over it as it was originally and perhaps even more greater than it was our to have dominion over in the Garden.

Heavenly Father, the life blood of your Son Jesus Christ makes glad your holy people and gives them life. May we ever partake of this water of life and live and reign with you, your Son and the Holy Spirit unto life everlasting. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
