#DailyDevotion Jesus Is Greater Than The Angels Because…

Heb 1 10And: Lord, in the beginning You laid the foundation of the earth and Your hands made the heavens! 11They will perish, but you continue. They will all become old like a garment. 12You will roll them up like a blanket, and like a garment they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will never end. 13To which of the angels did He ever say: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? 14 aren’t all angels spirits that serve Him and are sent to help those who are going to inherit salvation?

Hebrews continues with the quoting of the Psalms, particularly here Psalm 102. He makes the claim here that the LORD in the Psalm is our LORD Jesus Christ. This of course makes sense of the Gospel of John chapter 1, “10He was in the world, and He made the world, and the world didn’t know Him.” Paul in Col. 1 says, “15He is the Image of the invisible God, the Firstborn over all creation, 16since in Him was created everything visible and invisible in heaven and on earth — thrones, lords, rulers, or powers — everything was created by Him and for Him.”

Jesus is the LORD. As earlier in the chapter it says His throne will last forever, so too here, “Your years will never end.” To attribute to Jesus “You are the same,” is to call Him divine. As Revelations testifies, 1:8“I am the Alpha and the Omega (the A and the Z],” says the Lord God, Who is and was and is coming, the Almighty.” Again in Rev. 22, “13I am the Alpha and the Omega (the A and the Z], the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” It is written in Mal. 3, “6“But I the LORD have not changed,…” This attribute is attributed to the Son, Jesus Christ. Whatever can be said of the Father can be said of the Son, other than unoriginate, for the Son is begotten of the Father. Because Jesus does not change like the Father, you depend on all His promises and His works.

He then quotes Psalm 110. This is spoken to the King as the LORD God, the King of Israel speaks as one who rebuilds Zion, the heavenly Zion. It is my contention that the Hebrew in this Psalm should be translated, “Yahweh says to Adonai” as opposed to “Yahweh says to my lord.” The consonants are the same. The difference is what we say the vowels are at the end of ADNY. Is is “ai” or “i”? Ai designates the person is God, and “i” denotes possession. In view of Jesus quoting this in His ministry which confounds His opponents, that only makes sense to me if ADNY is Adonai, who is God.

We can note it is the Father who makes Jesus’ enemies His footstool for His feet. Jesus’ enemies being of course the devil and his minions, but also those who rejected Him as the Messiah and who persecute His Church. Kleinig in his commentary notes this reflects iconography from ancient Egypt which depicts Pharaoh’s enemies on the footstool of his throne.

Finally, Jesus is better than the angels because they serve Him and are sent to help those who are going to inherit salvation. They serve those who inherit salvation because they are one with the One whom they serve. If any angel were greater than Jesus, Jesus would have to serve them. But no, they serve Him. Not that we should despise angels because of this. They are like our tudors until such time as we reach maturity in the resurrection.

Heavenly Father, may we recognize Your Son Jesus Christ as premier above all the angels and glorify and praise Him for all His salvific work. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
