#DailyDevotion Jesus Is David’s Son, Who Sits On His Throne Forever

Psalm 89 19Once in a vision You said to Your faithful ones: “I set a boy above a warrior and promoted one chosen from the people. 20I found My servant David and anointed him with My holy oil. 21With a firm hand I will help him and strengthen him with My arm. 22No enemy will attack him by surprise and no wicked person mistreat him.

This vision is most likely shown to Samuel when the LORD sent him to Jesse’s house to anoint one of his sons at king. David was a young lad at the time. We don’t know his exact age. I would guess his teens. The LORD had chosen him from the people. He would be placed above the warriors who would not fight Goliath. He wasn’t afraid as he trusted in the name of the LORD to fight for him and to have him be victorious. The LORD lifted up David and made him victorious over whoever he fought. He would in time suffer much because of his sin with Bathsheba. Solomon would seem to go unmolested during his reign though.

23I will crush his enemies before him and strike down those who hate him. 24But I will be faithful to him and love him; My name will raise his horn high. 25I will put the sea under his power and the rivers under his right hand. 26He will call to Me, ‘You are my Father, my God and my Rock, Who saves me,’ 27Yes, I will make him the first-born, the highest of the kings of the earth. 28I will always be merciful to him, and be faithful in My covenant with him.

Further praise of David and what the LORD would work through him to establish his kingdom and bring about to fruition the promise of all the land the LORD had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Such things though would and can be said of David’s descendant and perhaps more rightfully so, namely Jesus Christ. Jesus demonstrated His power over the sea and the winds. He called upon God and called Him Father, my God and my Rock. He is indeed above all the kings of the earth as He is seated at the right hand of the Father. God was merciful to David and His covenant was with Him. Jesus is the fulfillment of that covenant the LORD made with David through Nathan in 2 Sam 7:12-17.

29I will have his Descendant go on forever and His throne like the days of heaven. 30If his sons forsake My law and don’t live by My rules, 31if they violate My laws and don’t do what I order, 32I will punish their wrongs with a rod and their sins with blows. 33But I will not stop loving him or prove Myself unfaithful. 34I will not violate My covenant or break My promise. 35One thing I swore by My holiness —I will not lie to David: 36His Descendant will go on forever, and His throne will be like the sun before Me; 37like the moon it will stand forever, and faithful is the One Who tells the truth in heaven.”

Jesus is David’s Descendant here. No other Davidic king went on forever. They all died and were buried with David. Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father forever. We who follow Jesus are the sons referred to here. We at times will sin and violate His law and break His covenant. When we do the LORD will discipline us. The Father’s love is constant on Jesus. He is loved by the Father continuously and He is always faithful to Jesus.

Jesus is the one who fulfills God’s promise to David. The LORD swore by His holiness since there is nothing higher than Himself to swear by. Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Descendant whose throne goes on forever and ever. The Father is the One who is faithful and who tells the truth in heaven. Jesus ascended His throne after His resurrection. He reigns from there forever. He even lifts up all who put their trust in Him to reign with Him forever and ever.

Most Faithful God and Father, You swore by Your Holiness to place David’s Descendant upon a throne that lasts forever and You fulfilled that in Your Only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Grant us faith in Him so may live and reign in His kingdom forever. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
