#DailyDevotion Jesus Fulfilled His Vows So We Would Have An Inheritance

Psalm 61 5O that You, God, would hear my vows and give me the inheritance of those who fear Your name.

Immediately, David may be praying for him to be successful in conquering the Canaanites, the Philistines and whoever else may have been living in the land the LORD had promised the Israelites, through Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Those descendants who feared the name of the LORD were to receive and dwell in that land. David apparently made some vows to the LORD. We don’t do a lot of vows these days because we probably would have the mistaken idea we can bargain with God. Those who feared the LORD rightly probably didn’t have that understanding. The LORD had told the Israelites to take vows in His name. I don’t think the LORD was particularly beholden to answer these vows anymore than He is to answer our prayers. Perhaps they were more like, from our part, to show God we were serious about the thing we are asking.

But we must look beyond the boundaries of Israel today. We have a better inheritance the LORD has promised us. We who fear the name of Jesus are to inherit the cosmos, the world and everything in it. The New Heavens and New Earth are our inheritance. Our inheritance is the resurrection and eternal life. Greater than both these things is God is our inheritance. The LORD is our God and we are His people. We are co-heirs with Christ Jesus. It is a great and marvelous thing to inherit the LORD and be His heirs.

6Add days to the king’s life; may his years go on and on, 7and may he sit enthroned before God forever. May kindness, and truth be appointed to keep him safe.

If David were speaking of himself here, it might seem kind of selfish. I know personally, pastors feel weird including prayers for themselves in a service, but we need prayers too and ask you to join us in those prayers in the service. David wrote this psalm to be sung by the congregation. It could be understood along the lines of, “God save the king!” But here, as well as above, this speaks not just to whoever is sitting on the throne in Israel. This speaks of David’s descendant whom the LORD promised would sit on David’s throne forever. He sits on the throne at the right hand of God. This is Jesus Christ, David’s promised seed. Jesus was raised from the dead never to die again. He ascended to the right hand of the Father where He reigns for all eternity.

Kindness and truth have been appointed to keep Him safe. As co-heirs with Christ who are seated with Him in the heavenly realms (Eph. 2), kindness and truth keep us safe. They preserve us in the one true faith unto life everlasting. Should we ever doubt God’s great mercy towards us, we only need to look at Jesus on the cross and know the kindness of God the Father toward us. All we need to do is pick up His Word to be affirmed in His truth.

8Then I will sing of Your name forever as I daily fulfill my vows.

Now and forever, seated with Christ in the heavenly realms, we sing of the name of Jesus forever. We sing the Trinitarian doxology with all the heavenly chorus forever. Jesus daily fulfills His vows to the Father. In Him also, we fulfill the vows we have taken to remain faithful to Him and trust Him for all good things.

Heavenly Father, may your kindness and truth bring us to receive the inheritance You have promised to all who trust in the name of You only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, so we may sing praises to You name now and forevermore. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
