##DailyDevotion Is The LORD’s Power & Might Law Or Gospel To You?
Isaiah 40:25-31 25“Is there anyone you can compare Me with and who is equal to Me?” asks the Holy One. 26Look up high and see! Who made these? Who brings out their army by number? He calls them all by name. Because He is so strong and powerful, not one star is missing. 27Jacob, why do you complain? Israel, why do you say, “What happens to me is hidden from the LORD; my God fails to treat me fairly?” 28Don’t you know? Didn’t you hear? The everlasting God, the LORD who made the whole earth, doesn’t get tired or weary. No one can by searching find out what He knows.
Isaiah 40 is considered by many the beginning of the Gospel in Isaiah. It is called that because starting at this point there is such a stark contrast between it and the previous chapters that are all gloom and doom. But it should be of no surprise to those who know the LORD speaks to us in terms of Law and Gospel.
Now depending on your attitude towards God, whether your trust him or not, some of the above verses may seem like Law if you don’t trust them but Gospel if you do. To those in our day who deny the power of God or that he even exist, these will most certainly sound like Law to you. God is putting you in your place. While you may deny there are any gods, you may have placed yourselves, or science, or government as god. But the LORD, the God of Israel makes it very clear, there is no one who can compare with him or is equal to him.
As an example, who made the stars? Who brings them out for us and calls them by name? Who preserves them and keeps them? It is the power and glory of the God of Israel who made them and sustains the universe. If He quit thinking about them, they would disappear in an instance. Who keeps our atoms together, the protons, electrons and neutrons? Who keeps the quarks working the way they do? Science is still trying to figure these things out to some extant. They think they get it figured out and then someone finds what they know is only true on a certain level then there are new questions that are asked. So the LORD says here, “No one can by searching find out what He knows.”
Now the Israelites were complaining. They think what happens to them is hidden from the LORD. They think the LORD treats them unfairly. You might think that sometimes also. But the Israelites were rebelling against the LORD, worshiping other gods and trusting in them, offering them their sacrifices. They were committing grievous sins against the will of the LORD. Maybe your life is crazy. Are you living contrary to His will. You may find that you have. It’s a good time to repent, trust in the the Holy One, Jesus Christ, and start repairing the damage you have done. He will accept you and forgive you.
But even if you life is a mess caused by others and you trust the LORD, then these words can and will give you great comfort. “ 28Don’t you know? Didn’t you hear? The everlasting God, the LORD who made the whole earth, doesn’t get tired or weary.” The LORD Jesus Christ is governing all things for your good, even the craziness of life. He exercises His great power and might on your behalf. He never leaves or forsakes you.
Heavenly Father, grant us faith in your great power and mercy in Christ so do not lose hope but constantly look to you for all good things in the midst of evil. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
