#DailyDevotion His Mercies Are New Every Morning
Lamentations 3: 22The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Smack dab in the midst of Lamentations we have this ray of hope. Jeremiah had been pronouncing judgment after judgment upon the Jews because of their lack of faithfulness to the Lord. It has been all gloom and doom. Yet perhaps, no we know there was a remnant in Judah that was faithful to the Lord. With the coming destruction and exile of their people because of their unfaithfulness they would need something to sustain them. So the Lord gives this word to them.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. The Lord has certainly shown this throughout the history of Israel. Time and time again the Israelites rebel against the Lord, complain about his treatment and the go off and worship other gods. But the Lord sends judges, prophets, and kings to deliver them. Because of his love for Abraham, he always keeps a remnant for himself and he is devoted to them. His steadfast love for mankind also never ceases. He never allows the memory of himself to be lost. He always has a witness upon the earth calling out to mankind to repent and believe so he may have mercy upon us. Despite all our rebellions and worshipping of other gods, the Lord’s steadfast love towards mankind continues to have the crops come in, the animals to produce, morning and evening, the seasons rolls so we may all be able to survive.
The mercies of the Lord never end. Time after time in the midst of trouble the Lord sends his help to us. We may have departed ways with him but he is always there ready to forgive. The mercy he has shown us in his only begotten Son Jesus Christ on the cross is eternal. Our sins incurred an eternal debt and it took the death of one who is eternal to erase that debt. Through his human nature God the Son experienced the full brunt of our punishment for our iniquity, namely death, so God could have mercy upon us.
Did you have a bad yesterday? The Lord’s mercies are new every morning. Every day we can start with the Lord. Whatever our trials, tribulations and troubles of the day before: the Lord refreshes us with his mercies in the morning. We need not dwell on the bad experiences of the previous day. Every morning we begin our task with the Lord. Begin your day asking for the Lord’s help and strength for the task ahead of you and you can be certain because of this promise the mercies of the Lord will be working with you to get through this day.
We can believe this because great is the faithfulness of the Lord. The Lord has fulfilled what he has said he would do in the past. Jesus is the yes to all of God’s promises. He promises us a savior at the beginning of the human race and he has delivered upon that promise in Jesus Christ. He has promised you his faithful steadfast love and his mercies are new every morning. You can believe it because of Jesus.
Heavenly Father pour out upon us your mercies this morning that we may have the strength to face the day anew in your strength trusting in your steadfast love and your faithfulness toward us in Christ Jesus. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
