#DailyDevotion Crying Out My God Is A Cry Of Faith.
Psalm 22 My God, My God, why did You forsake Me? Far away from Him Who can save Me, I cry out. 2My God, I call by day, but You don’t answer, at night, and I get no rest.
I don’t know if David actually experienced anything that would cause him to say these things. Yes, he certainly had a lot of trouble with Saul. Later, after his sin with Bathsheba, things went pretty downhill from there, particularly with his son Absolum. But I wonder sometimes, because David was a prophet and the Spirit would get a hold of him, if some of these psalms were not the result of that and David is writing psalms about what is revealed to him in such situations. Today’s psalm is one of those instances. I say that because Psalm 22 is such a detailed vision of our LORD Jesus Christ’s crucifixion.
Jesus of course calls attention to this psalm and prays it from the cross as he is being crucified in Matthew, Mark and Luke.
My God. He prays this in faith. Oftentimes in the Bible, you may hear unbelievers call the LORD, “your God.” Even in the depth of desperation, pain and suffering, the Messiah continues to look to the LORD, the Father with faith and hope. Yet, the Son is forsaken there. For you see, the sin of the world has been placed upon him even as the sins of Israel were put on the sacrifices of atonement and the scapegoat. As the morning and evening sacrifice, the sins of the world were imputed to Jesus. God the Father cannot stand the sight of him for he hates sin and all who do evil. (Ps. 5:5) As our sin, your sin on the spotless Lamb of God, he is now far from his God who can save him. Jesus truly feels this. This is not mere play. What you and I should experience because of iniquities, Jesus feels to the depths of his soul.
Jesus cries out to his God by day and at night, but he gets no answer and he gets no rest. At least, he does not get the answer he was hoping for. To the cross you will go and the sins of the world you will pay the price. There isn’t going to be another way. “Not my will be done but your will be done,” is the reply of our Savior in the Garden.
Perhaps you feel this way yourself sometimes, abandoned by God your Father. Continue with Jesus to say, “My God,” with faith in hope. Jesus said, “If you would be my disciple, you must follow me and bear your own cross.” Suffering will be no stranger to you.
3But You are holy, on Your throne; You are praised by Israel. 4Our fathers trusted You; they trusted You, and You rescued them. 5They cried to You and were saved; they trusted You and were not disappointed.
We see Jesus does not lose sight of God his Father, His nature, character and history with His people. He is holy. He is on His throne. He is praised by His people and His people put their trust in Him. When they cried out, He rescued them. They prayed with loud cries and were saved. Not today for you Jesus. All the curses He pronounced on fallen away Jacob have come on you today. God will not hear “today.” God will not rescue “today.” Today you must suffer. Today you must die.
Yet, we should take great comfort in our Savior’s words here as they are our hope. They are his promises to us. God our Father will hear, answer, save and deliver us for Jesus’ sake.
Heavenly Father, do not be far from us when we cry to you but for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, hear us and deliver us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
