#DailyDevotion Call Upon The LORD. He Will Hear You
Psalm 18 3I called on the LORD Who deserves praise and was saved from my enemies. 4Death surrounded me with its snares; torrents of destruction overwhelmed me; 5the grave was all around me to catch me; death came toward me to trap me.
David and Jesus called on the LORD and were saved from their enemies; David from Saul, Jesus was death and the grave. You may remember Jesus crying out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” quoting the 22nd Psalm, which David prayed. Yet that is followed by, “Into your hands I commit my spirit.” For their deliverance, the Father deserves praise. Do you hear what they were experiencing? Death surrounding them. Torrent of destruction overwhelmed them. The grave was all around them to catch and trap them. Do you ever feel like that?
Certainly we do at times in our lives. It may be human enemies. Perhaps you or someone you love has some terrible disease. Perhaps it is just work. Maybe the news has you tied up in knots because of politics. Maybe you are faced with having to grow up and face the world and everything is changing because of that. Then you may have some financial situation that seems untenable. Call on the LORD and wait on the LORD.
6In my trouble I called the LORD; I cried to my God for help. In His temple He heard me call, and my cry for help came to His ears. 7Then the earth swayed and quaked; the foundations of the mountains shook and rocked because He was angry. 8Smoke went up from His nostrils, and from His mouth came a devouring fire that made coals glow. 9He spread apart the heavens and came down with a dark cloud under His feet.
When David was in trouble he called on the LORD and cried to God for help. David has quite a descriptive way the LORD came and helped him. I’m certain this happens in some spiritual way we do not see. We’d probably pass out if we did. But several important things here we should believe. God our Father hears us call upon Him. What did Jesus say? “Ask you shall receive. Knock and it will be opened for you. Seek and you will find.” Again Jesus says, “You Father in heaven knows what you need before you ask him.” Again Jesus gives us the promise, “Ask anything in my name and He will do it.”
10He rode on a cherub and flew, darting along on wings of the wind. 11 He made the darkness hide Him; dark water and thick clouds became His shelter. 12Light shone ahead of Him as dark clouds passed by, with hail and glowing coals. 13The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High spoke out; there was hail and glowing coals. 14He shot His arrows and scattered them; He shot His lightning flashes and threw them into a panic. 15Then the floor of the sea could be seen; the foundations of the earth were laid bare at Your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.
David seems to be pulling some imagery from when the LORD delivered the Israelites from the Egyptians during the plagues and at the Red Sea. Did David see this? Perhaps as a prophet he was given a vision of it. Can you see this early Sunday morning as Jesus was risen from the dead? Know this, when you call on your Father in heaven with faith in Jesus Christ, the Father is setting things in motion to answer your prayer in the manner that is best for you and for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Heavenly Father, hear us when we cry. Come down and deliver us from our problems so we may give you and the name of your Son Jesus Christ praise. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
