#DailyDevotion The Ten Commandments Begin With Gospel

October 5th

Read Deut 5:1–21

Deu 5:6-10  “‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.  (7)  “‘You shall have no other gods before me.  (8)  “‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.  (9)  You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,  (10)  but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

You may have never realized this but the Ten Commandments start out with Gospel.  What Gospel? You may ask. “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.”  Really, being taken out of the land of misery, the house of slavery and bondage is pretty big Gospel.  It is only after the Gospel has been proclaimed to Israel that Jesus tells them how he wants the Israelites to live before him and with one another.

In the New Testament Jesus sums up these Ten Commandments with two: Mat 22:37-40  And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  (38)  This is the great and first commandment.  (39)  And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  (40)  On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”  Note in the New Testament Gal 5:1  For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.  We have been freed from sin, the fear of death and the power of the devil.  John then tells us: 1Jn 3:23  And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death and resurrection you have freed us from sin, death and the devil.   Grant us your Holy Spirit that we may believe this, trust in you and love our neighbor.  Amen.
