Daily Reading: October 25

Read Matt 17:14–27
Mat 17:17 And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.”
Mat 17:20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

So at this point pastors often get their knickers in a bunch because Jesus is talking qualitative faith and not just ‘faith’ faith. Mainly because we don’t want people to think they cannot and are not saved if they don’t go around performing miracles.

Look to whom Jesus is talking! He’s talking about his disciples, the Apostles. He also seems to be hitting everyone around him also. The disciples did not believe in the power given by Jesus at their commission. The people are kind of doubting Jesus because his disciples failed. And Jesus is like, “How long do I have to put up with you people!”

Jesus chastises his disciples for having little faith. How little? Littler than a mustard seed size of faith. What does this mean? You and I quantitatively don’t even have faith the size of a mustard seed on some days, maybe even most days. How many mountains have you moved? How many flat tires have you prayed over to no avail? How many times have you laid your hands on your car on the side of an interstate and nada, nothing? Me, too many times.

Yet what we see here is Jesus is merciful to those most in need of it. Jesus doesn’t reject them because of their lack of faith. Jesus is an exact representation of the Father. He shows us the Father’s love. He has mercy on us and upon us though we do not deserve it. He goes to the cross dying for his enemies, the ungodly and those who hate God so they may have eternal life and live with him in blessedness forever.

Can we have faith the size of a mustard seed? Maybe, maybe not. But put your trust in the mercy of God in Christ Jesus and in the end, it will all work out for you. His mercy is always dependable.

Heavenly Father, grant unto us faith the size of a mustard seed that we may always put our faith in your Son Jesus Christ and never be moved from it that we may experience your mercy on the day of judgement. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
