Deut 11:1–25

Deu 11:18-20  “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.  (19)  You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.  (20)  You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

 

You may see some Jews with a box on their hand and tied to it a leather strap wrapped around their arm and it goes up to their head where it culminates in another box both of which have pieces of scripture in them. Or if you go to their house you will see a small container on the doorpost, it will also have a piece of scripture in it. They are trying to keep the commandment of the Lord given here.

 

In many Christian homes you may see pictures with biblical motifs, biblical paintings or just posters with scripture passages on it. In a sense, they too are trying to keep this commandment. Indeed the Word of God should be all around the believers’ homes. But most importantly is verse nineteen. Seeing the word of God all around you can be helpful to yourself and to others.

 

But teaching and talking about the Word of God with your children, family and friends at home, walking around, when you get up and when you go to bed is really effective in keeping up in the Word, learning it and living it. St. Paul writes, Rom 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” You may have all the words of scripture around you but be sure and certain it is entering the ears, hearts and minds of others when it is vocalized, when it is taught.

 

And when you speak or teach the word of God to others you are teaching yourself as well. As the word of God multiplies around you and those you know it can convict your hearts because of sin and bring you to repentance and it can comfort and encourage your hearts to fear, love and trust in God above all things. That is what the Lord is doing for his people here in Deuteronomy. He instructs them in all they have done in rebellion against him to convict their hearts. He reminds them of all they have done in the past to encourage to do good and also repeating his promises so strengthen them to do what they need to do. We also need to be reminded of these things. In particular we need to always be reminded of what God expects of us as Christians and we need to be reminded of what Christ has done for us and promises to do for us in the world to come.

 

Gracious God, Heavenly Father, always have your word around us and place it upon our lips that we may repent of our sins, trust in your Son Jesus Christ and live our lives according to your will. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
