Read Matt 21:1–22
Mat 21:8-9 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. (9) And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” Mat 21:14-16 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. (15) But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, (16) and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?”
Jesus has entered Jerusalem as its king. It was foretold by the prophets and Jesus fulfills the scripture here. Jesus is the very promised Son of David. 2Sa 7:11-15 “…from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. (12) When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. (13) He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. (14) I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, (15) but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.”
Jesus is the fulfillment of the promise made to David. His body is the temple he is building. Jesus is building a kingdom of those who put their faith in him. Indeed, the rod of men disciplined Jesus and with stripes, for he took upon himself the sin of man, and by his stripes we are healed. That is the purpose for which Jesus entered Jerusalem. He is there to be rejected by his people, turned over to the gentiles and be crucified as an atoning sacrifice outside the city for the sin of the world.
For this, Jesus is receiving his praise, honor and glory in the city and in the temple. Their King and the God had come to them to do all that is necessary for their salvation. While those who did not believe in him tried to quiet the people, the children sang out in praise. Even if the enemies of Jesus could stifle the praise due him, the rock would sing out his praise. So now, we who have become his subjects, his kingdom, his body also cannot but sing praise to Jesus for all he has done for us. 1Ti 1:17 To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
Lord Jesus Christ, you deserve praise, honor and glory for who you are and all you have done for us. Grant us your Spirit that your praise may always be upon our lips now and into life everlasting. Amen.
