#DailyDevotion Fear Not! A Savior Has Been Born. He Is Christ The Lord.
January 2nd
Read Luke 2:1–20 KJV
Luk 2:10-14 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. (12) And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. (13) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, (14) Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Ever notice the first thing an angel says when appearing before men is “Fear not.” That’s because angels are downright scary creatures. They are powerful and mighty and shining with God’s glory. Well as all angels he has a message, good news of great joy for all people.
So just what is that message? A Savior is born in the city of David, which is Christ the Lord. A savior is born. In the Old Testament you might have called them judges. The judges saved the Israelites from their temporal enemies. This judge, this savior would save us from our spiritual enemies.
Who is this savior? He is Christ the Lord. He is two other things here. Christ, the messiah, the anointed one of God who is David’s promised descendent come to take his father’s throne. He is Lord, the God of David who made David this promise. God and Man pleased with us to dwell. The Lord has become flesh to be our savior.
The rest of the heavenly chorus then chimes in with Glory to God and one earth peace, good will toward men. For that is the intent of the Lord, that we should give glory to him as the one who brings peace and God’s good will toward men. God’s glory is known chiefly in having mercy and forgiveness. This child is who will bring God’s mercy and forgiveness through his sacrifice.
The peace he comes to bring isn’t the peace the world gives but one of a far more lasting value. The peace he brings is between God and man. This child by his death and resurrection takes away the enmity between God and man and restores the relationship. God is at peace with us now in Christ. He has reconciled us to God. With faith in this we are reconciled to God.
Lord Jesus Christ, we give thanks to you and glory to the Father for sending you to become human flesh so that in that flesh peace with God could be made. Give us such repentance and faith that we might attain in our souls this wondrous reconciliation. Amen.
