#DailyDevotion The World Loves Darkness And Calls It Light
February 10th
Read John 3:22—4:6
Joh 3:31-36 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. (32) He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. (33) Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. (34) For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. (35) The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. (36) Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Joh 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it… 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. (10) He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. (11) He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. (12) But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, (13) who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God….Joh 3:18-19 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. (19) And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
Can you see a theme building up here? The world is in darkness. It cannot comprehend Jesus or his light. It prefers darkness. What the world calls darkness is actually light and what it calls light is the darkness of the former light bearer Satan. Yet Jesus’ light overcomes the darkness of Satan in this world. You and I are proof of it. Jesus came into the world that through him men may receive the light of God and eternal life.
Jesus bore testimony of what he had received by the Father and he has proclaimed it to men. That testimony is not hidden. It is not locked away in a cave somewhere or learned through being initiated into secret rituals. It stands there in the New Testament everything God wants mankind to know and what He had given to Jesus to give to us. It can be clearly heard in millions of pulpits across the world and in the mouths of your believing neighbors and fellow workers for Jesus has placed it on their hearts.
Jesus is the Light of the World. He was given the Spirit without measure and he gives the Holy Spirit to those he calls out of the world and baptizes them into himself. He gives this gift of eternal life freely. He gives the gift of faith that we may receive it. No doubt Jesus has given you at some point in time in your life this gift. Perhaps he’s even giving it to you right now. Will you believe with this gift given you or will you do like the unbelieving Jews and reject your God? Faith is eternal life. Rejection, the wrath of God remains on you.
O Holy Spirit, when you bring to us the gift of faith in Christ Jesus may we respond with using that faith to believe in Jesus Christ and be delivered from the wrath of God to come. Amen.
