#DailyDevotion Trust In The Name Of The Lord

Read Sam 17:20–47
1Sa 17:32-37 ESV And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” (33) And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.” (34) But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, (35) I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him. (36) Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” (37) And David said, “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you!”

If we would only take this account to heart what difference it would make in our lives. If we simply lived the life of faith which David exhibits here how our lives would be changed.

What is the difference between how David responds to Goliath and his threats and the rest of Israel? Just this, faith in the Word and Promises of the Lord God.

We note that when David slew the lion and the bear who gets the credit? Is David bragging about himself? Absolutely not! No, it was the Lord who delivered David, but the Lord used the hands of David to accomplish this work.

What instruments David uses to fight Goliath is immaterial. David has one weapon and one weapon only, the name of the Lord. It reminds me of Martin Luther’s Hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” in particular this verse: And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us: The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him.

What little word fells not only Goliath but the prince of darkness and all his minions? Jesus.

So call upon the name of Jesus in the day of trouble and call upon when times are good. Put your faith in the name of the One who conquered your greatest enemy like David and your Goliaths will be slain just as sure as David’s was.

Lord Jesus Christ, grant us such faith in your name that we may act in faith with all our trials and tribulations as David did when he encountered Goliath. In your name Jesus we pray. Amen.
