Eph. 1:18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
On this day we celebrate the ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ to the right hand of God. Forty days after demonstrating his resurrection to those who would be his witnesses and instructing them in the ways he had fulfilled everything written of him in Moses and the prophets, we was taken up into heaven. There he is seated at the right hand of the Father. Now the right hand of the Father is not a physical place but a position of power and authority. We say in modern parlance that someone is so and so’s right hand man. On construction sites and the like the right hand man has authority, the authority of the contractor. He orders the men. He writes the checks and the like.
In similar fashion, Jesus at the right hand of God means what Paul tells us here in Ephesians. He is far above every rule, authority, power, dominion and name. He has all things place under his feet and is placed as head over all things, for the Church. The right hand of God is not a localized nor limiting space. It is quite the opposite. Verse twenty three tells us the fullness of him who fills all in all. Here Jesus exercises all power and dominion over all creation. He fills all creation. He is omnipresent and omniscience. He has all power and knows all things. There is nothing and no one in all creation has power, dominion or authority over him for he has these things over all creation.
As the Church we take great joy in this for he exercises this authority and power for us, the Church. Everything, I mean everything, happens in the world for the benefit of the Church and the members thereof. Satan and the world does not get one over on the Church. While it may look like it at times, with all the wickedness in the world and the attacks on the Church, Jesus even commands these things for the spreading of the gospel and the perseverance of his saints unto life everlasting. All things serve him whether they like it or know it on behalf of his people, namely you.
Heavenly Father, we rejoice at the ascension of your Son Jesus Christ to your right hand of power and might. As you have promised, may he continually use this authority to spread the gospel and to strengthen those who put their trust in him unto life everlasting. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
