#DailyDevotion The Faith God Gives In Christ Fulfills God’s Will.

October 3rd
Read Deut 4:1–20
Deu 4:1-7 “And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. (2) You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you. (3) … (5) See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. (6) Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ (7) For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?

In as much as many nations expressed the natural law written upon their hearts in laws and statutes throughout the world and particularly there in what we call the Middle-East, the nation of Israel had received a way of life from the Lord which was more pure than their neighbors laws. The Lord certainly thought so. He instructed the Israelites that if they lived the life in the commandments, the statutes, the prescriptions and the like then their neighbors would say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”

Now all these things which the Lord had given the Israelites were for the Israelites. That is key in understanding much of what we do in the Christian Church. They were of the Old Covenant. We are under the New. All the Law of Moses is fulfilled, completed in Christ Jesus. Only He obeyed the Law as God the Father had intended the Israelites to do. And so the whole Law of Moses is abrogated in Christ Jesus. It is put aside. We have a new and better covenant. Only faith in Christ Jesus can make us pleasing to God.

But that does not mean the Law of Moses cannot be instructive. Most societies on earth would be a lot better off if they adopted much of the political law from Moses. But if we think any particular law from Moses would not fit our particular time and situation we are not bound to it. Christ is its fulfillment. Many try to bind Christian consciences to the old covenant. But Peter said at the first Church council, “Act 15:10 Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11 But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.”

So under the New Covenant we have this: 1Jn 3:23 “And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.” The terms of the New Covenant are this:Jer 31:33-34 … I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (34) And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” So the Holy Spirit will have us walk after the will of God as we have faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. Faith will do all that the will of God requires.

O Lord Jesus Christ, in your flesh you have fulfilled all that the Law demands and in your flesh you have received to due penalty of all mankind who have transgressed your holy law. Grant us such faith in you that in that faith your law is fulfilled in us and we live out your will in our lives. Amen.
