#DailyDevotion YHWH’s Jeshua & Zedicha Is Jesus

Isaiah 56 The LORD says: “Be just and do what is right, for I am ready to save you and to show My righteousness.

The proper for this week in the Old Testament is Isaiah 56: 1, 6-8. It skips 2-5 which I give you here: 2Blessed is the man who does this and the person who clings to it, who keeps the Sabbath holy and his hands from doing anything wrong.” 3Let no foreigner who joins the LORD say, “The LORD will surely cut me off from His people.” Let no eunuch say, “Oh, I’m a dry tree!” 4This is what the LORD says: “as for the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, choose what I delight in, and cling to My covenant, 5I will give them in My house and within My walls a monument and a name that is better than having sons and daughters. I will give them an everlasting name that will not be wiped out.

Our translation of “be just” more literally is “keep/observe justice.” When you hear keep/observe you mind may go to Jesus’ words at the end of Matthew 28, 20 “teaching them to observe everything as I have commanded you…” Or maybe it may go to John 14, 23“If you love Me, you’ll keep My word, and My Father will love you, and we will come to you and live with you.” And I think you would be right in doing so. But is what the LORD Jesus Christ saying to just make sure justice is being kept? Is he perhaps like in Matthew and John meaning something broader? In those instances Jesus is referring not so much to our outward actions as much as he is wanting us to treasure, keep close, and ponder his commandments, his instruction, all of his teachings? I think it is the latter because of what follows, “do righteousness.” Indeed the natural thing the follows keeping justice (i.e. holding tight to all that God has taught) is doing all that God has taught us. Both are the result of believing the LORD Jesus Christ is here for us and not against us.

When we translate this first verse into English we often miss something very subtle here. Literally the Hebrew says, “Near my salvation (my yeshua, my Joshua, my Jesus) to come, my righteousness (zedicha) is revealed.” Who or what is near? Jesus, the LORD, my salvation, my righteousness is near and revealed. This is the reason we are to keep justice and do righteousness. So the angel tells Mary and Joseph to name their child Jesus because he would save his people from their sins.

We are blessed if we do this. We keep the Sabbath by trusting in Jesus who is our Sabbath rest (Hebrews 3 & 4).  We are not so much forbidden from working as much as keeping our hands from evil and performing acts of mercy upon men created in the image and likeness of God, even as Jesus healed and taught on the Sabbath. We, in Christ Jesus are in an eternal rest/Sabbath of the LORD. And this is not just for the physical descendent of Abraham but for all people everywhere who will join themselves to the LORD. He tells us Gentiles to not let ourselves think the LORD will cut us off from his people Israel. By faith, we too are children of God and members of Israel. Even the eunuch who trusts in Christ must not think he is dry because he has no children to carry on his name. He has been given the name of Jesus, God’s Messiah. That name can never be wiped out. Indeed, we’ll bear Jesus’ name for all eternity.

Heavenly Father, as you have called us to have faith in your salvation, that is Jesus, your righteousness, grant us your Holy Spirit that we may also keep justice and do righteousness to the praise and glory to your name, through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
