Isaiah 2:1–5

2 This is what Isaiah, the son of Amoz, saw about Judah and Jerusalem. 2In the last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established at the top of the mountains and be raised above the hills, and all the nations will flow in streams to it. 3Then many people will go and say,“Come, let us go up to the LORD’s mountain, to the temple of the God of Jacob, and He will teach us His ways, and we will live in them.” The LORD’s instruction comes from Zion and His Word from Jerusalem. 4And He will judge between the nations and make decisions for many people. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.. No nation will raise a sword against another or train for war anymore. 5Come, people of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD.

It was pretty bleak in Isaiah’s day. Everyone did whatever they wanted to do. They had no concern for their neighbor. They worshipped other gods. They were sexually immoral and perverted. They did not care for the poor, the widow or the foreigner living among them. Does that sound too familiar? The LORD was sending prophets to warn the people to repent and if they didn’t certain destruction would come down upon them. It was in the midst of the message of certain destruction this well known passage (which is completely misused by the United Nations) was prophesied. There was still some good news.

In the Last Days, and we are in the Last Days, the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established at the top of the mountains. That is to say, the Church would be placed above all the nations and all the devices of the nations. All the nations will flow in streams towards it. That is indeed what is happening now. While we may be experiencing people fleeing the Church here in our country, other countries the Church of Jesus Christ is growing like gangbusters. That is the way it has been since the foundation of the world. The Gospel grows in one place and then moves on and grows the Church in other place as the love of those people grow cold.

Daniel saw something similar in King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. A rock struck the iron with clay mixed feet and it grew until it filled the whole earth. That rock was Jesus. The statue in that dream is the spirit of Babylon which continually by man’s efforts tries to unite the world under tyranny.  The LORD Jesus Christ though will, through the forgiveness of sins, grow his kingdom in this world until his return when he shall small the nations which oppose him, raise the dead, renew the world and establish a true peace among all peoples through his blood.

Even now through his mouth, the mouth of the Church the LORD Jesus Christ instructs the nations in the ways of peace, his ways. On the day of his second advent our Jesus will fulfill for us the words of Isaiah’s prophesy, “Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.. No nation will raise a sword against another or train for war anymore.” When everything is brought under subjection to his rule and kingdom, then we will know fully the peace he wants to bring to the world, the peace the world cannot accomplish by its own devices. So we pray for that day, “Come Lord Jesus.”

Come Lord Jesus Christ. Come quickly and put an end to worldly and demonic powers and subject all things under your feet that your Church may know fully your peace. Continually send your gospel unto the nations that their people may stream to your Church and find the peace beyond all comprehension. In your precious name we pray. Amen.
