#DailyDevotion Jesus Is The God & YHWH We Are Looking For

Isaiah 256On this mountain the LORD of armies will prepare for all people a banquet of rich foods, a festival with wines kept on their sediment, rich foods full of marrow, wines kept on their sediment and filtered. 7On this mountain He will remove the veil of grief covering all people and the web covering all nations. 8He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces. He will remove the disgrace of His people from the whole world;for the LORD has said so. 9On that day they will say: “This is our God; we look to Him to save us. This is the LORD we wait for. Let us be glad and delighted that He saved us.”

This is one of the great passages from the Old Testament that gives us insight into the world to come. It is a far cry from floating on some cloud and plucking strings on a harp in very ennui fashion. We see the LORD of armies and he prepares for all people a banquet of rich foods. So the world to come is pictured as a feast. He continues with a festival with great wine and rich foods full of marrow. Occasionally Jesus uses this image in his parables talking about the kingdom of God and wedding feasts. Revelation in its last chapter talks about the Last Day being the wedding banquet for the Lamb and his Bride the Church. I know I like going to wedding feasts. Food, wine, music, dancing friends and loved ones, what’s not to like.  And that is how the world to come is pictured before us.

On the Last Day Isaiah sees the veil of grief and the web covering all nations is removed. Death is swallowed up forever. Death and Sin is this veil of grief and the web that covers us. On that mountain in Jerusalem, Mt. Zion, in one sense this has already happened. Jesus by being the atoning sacrifice for the sin of the world has peeled back the web and veil of sin and death. His resurrection has justified us. His resurrection has conquered death for us. Because of his death and resurrection, when we put our faith in him, our sins are no longer counted against us and we do not taste death when we experience physical death.

Yet there is coming on the Last Day when Christ Jesus shall return with the clouds and the heavenly host of angels. The saints who have preceded us will rise from the dead in new immortal, incorruptible, glorious bodies like our LORD Jesus Christ’s resurrected body and then we who remain will be changed instantly and meet our LORD in the air. On that day we will be given the new heavens and new earth where righteousness reigns. There will no more sin. Since there will be no more sin there will be no more death. Both Sin and Death will be cast into the Lake of Fire along with Satan, all his fallen angels and all the world that rejected Jesus of Nazareth as their Messiah, Savior, Redeemer and King. Jesus will wipe away every tear from our faces and remove our disgrace.

We will point to Jesus and say, “This is our God; we look to Him to save us. This is the LORD we wait for. Let us be glad and delighted that He saved us.” Indeed it will be a great of gladness, delight and rejoicing. Waiting for our LORD Jesus Christ to come and fulfill this word is what gives us hope for the day and strength to carry on no matter what the struggles we may be enduring in this life. This world doesn’t last forever  but Jesus’ kingdom does.

Heavenly Father, grant unto us repentance of life and faith in Jesus so we may join him on that mountain on the day of his return and enter the feast prepared for us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
