#DailyDevotion God Created All Of Creation, For You

Genesis 1:1–5 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was desolate and uninhabitable, and it was dark on the deep sea, but God’s Spirit hovered over the waters. 3Then God said, “Let there be light!”a And there was light. 4God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness, 5and God called the light day and the darkness night. Evening came and then morning – the first day.

Well that is pretty clear. In the beginning the Bible starts out. It is interesting that the Gospels of Mark and John also start out that way, for they begin a new beginning. But now we have the very beginning. In this beginning God creates the heavens and the earth. Poof! It was there. We don’t get a lot of detail in this sentence. I believe this first sentence is simply a prologue of the verses to follow in a seven day sequence in which everything is brought into existence as we know it.

So in this beginning the earth was desolate and uninhabitable and it was dark on the deep sea. It was chaos. It’s like a canvas upon which an artist is looking at and wondering what to do with it. Anything could happen. There was no dry land. As such there were not trees, animals, fish in the sea. It was just chaos and darkness.

Upon these dark waters God’s Holy Spirit hovered, brooded, like a mother hen upon her egg. While we often attribute creation to God the Father, we shall see here the whole Trinity is involved, as they are One, in creation. And God said, “Let there be light!” As the Father speaks now we have the Second Person of the Trinity involved, the Word of God who later joins us in creation and becomes man. Now this is created light. God is Light, uncreated light. In him there is no darkness at all.

The light created by God is good. What is this light? There is no sun or moon or stars? Creation itself is a supernatural event. If you a looking for scientific proof of it, you will find none. We cannot recreate it. Genesis 1 is not a scientific textbook and should not be treated as one. We are getting in the skinny of it all in general. Scientists themselves are still baffled with creation, hence they are always coming up with a new theory because the older theories don’t fit exactly and of course cannot be recreated. When we look at the scientific research that is done today, digging deeply into the subatomic level and peering out into the vast universe with quantum theory, string theory, the theory of relativity and the fact that even gravity itself does not have a final definition, it really makes me marvel all at what God has done on this first day. At best we can say it is the light of the universe. God separates it from the darkness. And it was dark and it was light, the first day. The light is there and then it is not. Then it is there again! God calls the light day and dark he calls night. And so we do also today. The signs of day and night have not been created yet. What a wonder!

And why does God create the heavens and the earth? We don’t get it yet in this part of the text. But he creates it and adorns it to give it to you. Earth may or may not be the center of the universe, but you are the center of God’s universe. Creation is God’s gift to you. Rejoice in it.

Heavenly Father, you created the heavens and the earth by the power of your Word and you give it to man. Grant us faith to believe this and live our lives as if it were true so we may live to the praise of your glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
