#DailyDevotion Christian, You Are The Light In The World

Eph. 58Once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. 9Live as children of light, since light produces everything good and righteous and true. 10And test things to see if they please the Lord.

Paul uses many contrast of those who are in Christ and those who are, the one here being light and darkness. When we were not in Christ we were darkness. That is because we belonged to the devil who is also utter darkness. He does not have the light which is funny because Lucifer means light bearer. But in his rejection of the Son of God  and all that is God he no longer has the light or is light. People who do not follow Jesus who is the light of God, like Satan are darkness. John14“In Him[Jesus] was life, and the Life was the Light of men.” Jesus says, John 8:12 “I am the Light of the world. Follow Me, and you will never wander in the dark but will have the Light of Life.”

So Jesus is the Light. Those who are in Jesus are also light. Jesus says, Matt. 514“You are the light of the world.” The light of Christ is made manifest in our hearts. Israel of old was supposed to be a light to the world but they did not walk in the light that was given to them. Now Christ Jesus has come to give light to the Jews and to the Gentiles that they all may become sons of light and the inheritors of light.

It is the gift of God that we are made his children in Jesus through baptism and by the gift of faith in Christ. We have heard the gospel call, the invitation to come out of the darkness into the light which is Christ and the Holy Spirit through baptism, preaching, and teaching has captured our hearts and made them new so we can possess the light and to become the light in Jesus.

Since we are children of light and are the light of the world as Jesus is the Light of the world Paul exhorts us to live as children of light. “Light produces everything good and righteous and true.” It is an interesting expression Paul uses here. The Greeks often talked about that which is good, beautiful and true. They only had such things in earthly terms. Jesus and the Holy Spirit bring us to a much greater good, righteousness (which replaces the Greek beauty) and truth. For Jesus is the good, righteousness and truth. He freely gives us as a gift his good, righteousness and truth.

To live in the Light is to live in the good news that Jesus has brought us freely into his Light. It is to believe Jesus has rescued us from the darkness of Lucifer purely out of his grace. When we have such faith the Holy Spirit has us bear such fruit of the light, Gal. 522“But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace. He makes us patient, kindly, good, faithful, 23gentle, and gives us self-control.” To live in light is to believe in Jesus and to love the neighbor and love does no harm.

With this light we will be able to test whether things they please the Lord or not. Do they point to faith in Jesus? Do they show the love of God to your neighbor? If not, then it is not pleasing to the Lord.

O Father of lights, we give you thanks and praise for calling us out of darkness into your marvelous light in Christ Jesus. Continually give us your Holy Spirit that we may live as your children of light and when we fail forgive. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
