#DailyDevotion Give Thanks That You’ve Been Given The Free Gift Of Faith
Read 1 Sam 19:1–24
1Sa 19:19-24 And it was told Saul, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” (20) Then Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. (21) When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied. (22) Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” (23) And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. (24) And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
Those who are big on free will won’t like this passage. Our puny human wills with whatever freedom we may have cannot compare to the will of God. We cannot frustrate God’s plans. Saul sought to kill the one whom the Lord had anointed and appointed to take his place because of his sin. Saul sends men to kill David, but the Spirit of the Lord comes upon them and turns their hearts. He sends more and the same thing happens. He goes himself to kill David and the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him and he prophecies. Saul has no choice.
We have no free will when it comes to spiritual things and the mundane things of the world, well who knows how much freedom we have even have there. Martin Luther was right in his “Bondage of the Will.” Either God is riding and directing your heart or Satan is in spiritual matters and even in the normal, ordinary course of life things, the Lord is directing it all for His good purposes namely the spreading of the Good News of a Free Salvation through faith in His Son Jesus Christ and bringing people to faith in Jesus.
There is no doubt that we do not choose Jesus but that Jesus chooses us. Joh 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you…” Jesus invites himself into our hearts. Luk 19:5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” It is God’s will that we come to faith and are born of Him. Joh 1:12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…”
So if you have the Spirit of God and if you have faith in the Son of God, Jesus, the Second David, gives thanks that the Father of lights Jas 1:18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. This is not your doing but the Father’s. Have to humility to admit that apart from the will of God you would not choose Jesus, believe in Jesus or invite Him into your hearts. It is all God’s free gift in Christ Jesus on account of Christ Jesus.
I thank you heavenly Father, out of your great mercy and might you have called me to faith in Christ Jesus your Son and given me your Holy Spirit that I might have faith in Him and You. Ever pour out your Holy Spirit upon me that my mind and my will be in accordance with your mind and will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
