#DailyDevotion Jesus Is King David’s Greater Son

August 22nd
Read 1 King 2:1–27
1Ki 2:2-4 “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, (3) and keep the charge of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, (4) that the LORD may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’

Just how will Solomon show himself strong and a man? Verse 3, by keeping the charge of Lord his God, walking in his ways, keeping his statutes, commandments, rules and testimonies as written in the Law of Moses. The Lord had promised David a dynasty that would last for all generations if he and his descendents would keep the Law. We shall see that with the exception of a couple none of them do this and Israel will be removed from the kingdom of Judah and Judah will fall into the hands of the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks and the Romans. But there was one in Israel, a son of David who would do all that the Lord would require. In order to accomplish this, the Lord himself would have to become a son of David. The Lord as David’s son, would establish David’s throne forever.

Luk 20:41-44 ESV But he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David’s son? (42) For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, (43) until I make your enemies your footstool.’ (44) David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?” Here Jesus lays a clue as to who and what David’s son will be. Jesus is that son and Jesus is the Lord who made the promise to David.

Heb 4:15 ESV For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Heb 7:26-28 ESV For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. (27) He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. (28) For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

These verses testify to the completeness of Jesus’ obedience to the Law of Moses, which he himself gave to Moses on the mountain. Because Jesus completely obeys the Law of Moses, his Father in Heaven gives him the throne of his father David. He establishes Jesus’ throne for all eternity and indeed, even in Christ Jesus gives us the kingdom as well. All who are baptized into Christ and believe the promises given us there have becomes heirs of Jesus Christ and of God the Father.

Lord God, Heavenly Father, you promised David a dynasty that would be eternal if his sons would keep your perfect law. You gave your only begotten Son Jesus to be a son of David and thereby establish your Word. Grant us such faith in Jesus that we too become partakers of his kingdom and be established as heirs of your dwelling place. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
